Curious as to how many lemmings are still using Meta platforms such as Facebook or Instagram?

No more Meta apps. FB, Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, Threads. Nothing. Painful at times but worth it.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 56 minutes ago

Deleted circa 2010. Never looked back.

Wish I didn't have to but in my country pretty much everyone still uses it. So if I want to keep in touch with people that I know irl or if I want to keep an eye open for gigs to go watch or whatever events that I might want to go to, I have to keep it around.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 hour ago

Still have an account, but haven't been of FB for over 2 years. Once I did some stats and found that only something like 4% of top 100 posts were updates from friends; rest was ads or suggested videos. So, I stopped checking it out and gradually forgot about it, and I found I wasn't missing out on anything.

I deleted my personal FB around a decade ago and Instagram few years ago but I joined back in because I needed pages for my business. I wouldn't exactly still say that I use them. I make one or two picture posts of my work a month and then leave.

I think I used Facebook from about 2006 to 20... 2016? I dunno. It was never good. Never used Instagram. I don't want to see other people's selfies if I don't know them

Fucking messenger is the only way to communicate with 90% of the population in my country.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 hours ago

I have some bad news for you….

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 hours ago

No. I found two scripts on github that unfriended everyone and deleted all my data ~two years ago.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 hours ago

I haven’t used it in about 10 years and in fact now have all Meta properties blocked on my networks.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago

Nope, I deleted my account in 2016ish during that shit show.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 hours ago

My family is all on messenger, and so it's either gotta be me or my husband using it or else we won't know any of the family plans (or daily discussions which is my main source of socialization.) Same goes for my friend group. I'd be very lonely without it, so that ends up a lot more important than my moral objections to meta.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 hours ago

Yes, for marketplace and some flea market groups. Most of my friends have moved on, some sadly to WhatsApp, which I refuse to install.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 hours ago

Similar to others, I got on Facebook when you had to have a .edu email address. I've been less than pleased with it in recent times, as my feed ignored activity by my friends and groups in favor of "suggested" content, and the Reels (which I tried in vain to disable) had degenerated into softcore porn, although/because I've never watched one.

I haven't logged in since Zuckerberg came out as mask-off fascist. I've kept the account in case I want to contact anybody, or check Marketplace. But I've found that my brother was correct: Facebook is the junk food of social connection. It tastes good, but always leaves you hungry. Getting off of it was painful, but I feel better for having done it.

On Facebook I am the group admin for our small town's main group.

WhatsApp for work stuff.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 hours ago

Never used any of them and get even more glad of it with passing time.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 hours ago

I still have a Facebook account. I mostly just check once a day to look at my Memories. I had already largely stopped using it because they stopped showing me things from my friends or pages I follow. Typically it would be one post at the top of the feed from someone or something I follow, then a bunch of “suggested” content, not what I want to see. I made my account in February 2005, back when you had to be a college student at a university Facebook supported to get an account. Over the years I had several hundred friends, although I got more selective as I got older and weeded out people on my list and added a lot fewer of the people I met. All that to say, I don’t think there was a lack of content available to show me, they just don’t want to show me what my friends and family are doing.

One of my goals for this year is to set up my own Friendica instance for myself and maybe a few close family members. I’d like to try to figure out a way to take a Facebook data export and import it into Friendica. It looks like there’s no direct way, but maybe an indirect way by importing the Facebook data to WordPress, then importing the WordPress data to Friendica.

I think I'm too young for Facebook, and I deleted my Instagram account about a month ago. I was primarily using it to socialize with friends, but decided that wasn't worth the privacy cost.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 hours ago

I finally gave up. iiwant to keep in touch with what distant friends are doing. Finding and sharing memes is not doing something and that seems to be all I ever saw. Some people need to get a life. (unless you are confined to a hospital bed there are better things to eo with your life.) Too bad - I miss the rare contact with those distant friends.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 hours ago

I do. For family, co-workers, marketplace, and a few groups - neighborhood, work-related info, and animal shelters.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 hours ago

I use WhatsApp for work, ditched the rest

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 hours ago

I joined when it was for students only and quit sometime around 2007. There was a "quit Facebook day" once a year that was for raising awareness about how evil Facebook was even back then. I quit on one of those days. At least that's part of the reason why I quit. Also the only Facebook friend I really interacted with abruptly got extremely fundamentalist Christian and started posting stuff that I couldn't stand to be assaulted with.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 hours ago

Havent used Facebook since like 2015. Used Instagram till about November last year. It really felt like a huge waste of time just scrolling on it.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 hours ago

Never used it, never even intentionally been on the website.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 hours ago

I mostly interact with FB through Caprine, to talk to like 4 or 5 people who are still on it. Other than that I sometimes ask my sister to check for things on Market place but thats it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 hours ago

God no. I nuked my socials during 2020. I got so sick and tired of people bitching/praising about Trump's first term. I had FB so I could talk to family that still lived in MA. and friends from school. I'd get like one vacation photo and then days of nothing but Trump stuff.

FB: no, since AGES. 5 years at least

Insta: occasionally, to chat with people mostly. Couple of times a month

Whatsapp: regularly, unfortunately. Work group chats there, clients there, friends there, I wish I could move them elsewhere

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 hours ago

Dropped Facebook and Instagram accounts on inauguration day... kept WhatsApp to continue talking to family abroad but trying to persuade people to join Signal instead

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 hours ago

Yes, just for marketplace.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 hours ago

I have a profile to keep in touch with a friend over Messenger, but a few years back I went through and deleted everything I ever posted so it’s basically just a shell account for Messenger now.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 hours ago

I'm not sure when I deleted my facebook about, but I moved into my current house 12 years ago and it was before that. Never had accounts on the other Meta services.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 hours ago

I got on FB when it was still only for students. I quit something like 5 years ago. I never had insta. I quit twitter partially pre-corona and fully deleted it a couple years ago. I mostly just read things, especially during Corona when local governments posted a lot there (until recently, twitter was king in Japan. I think Insta has since dethroned it somewhat).

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 hours ago

I still have an account but haven't actively used it since 2016/2017. I log in once or twice a year to see what distant contacts have reached out so I can redirect them to channels I actively monitor.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 7 hours ago

I never did in the first place

It always seemed weird and artificial to me

[–] [email protected] 12 points 7 hours ago

Haven’t used Facebook since maybe 2016/7. Got off Instagram maybe around 2020ish. See zero purpose for either. I do miss having a way to easily contact those friends but I have most of their numbers. They just won’t randomly message unless I pop up on their feed

[–] [email protected] 4 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, to keep in contact with 6 people.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 hours ago

Same thing, and I only use Messenger now because Facebook broke Pidgin when they dropped using the standard XMPP protocol. The 3rd party plugin worked for a while, but as far as I know it still has lots of ongoing issues, which is exactly what FB wants. Pidgin was so much better as an app too.
