Today the Lemmy.fan family of frontends brings you something completely new:

daring.lemmy.fan! (or, DLF for short)

DLF runs the latest, cutting-edge release of Lemmy. The instance is separate from Lemmy.fan in that accounts, subscriptions, etc are not copied from Lemmy.fan. DLF is federated, however, so comments and communities can be made and posted across the fediverse.

It should go without saying, but daring.lemmy.fan is very much a sandbox and not anything to be trusted with permanent data. Though we prefer to rollback the database if we come across any issues, it may be necessary to wipe things and start completely over.

Hey, that's the joy and beauty of cutting-edge, open-source for you! Enjoy it! Frolic!

Russian security forces raided gay clubs and bars across Moscow Friday night, less than 48 hours after the country’s top court banned what it called the “global LGBTQ+ movement” as an extremist organization.

Police searched venues across the Russian capital, including a nightclub, a male sauna, and a bar that hosted LGBTQ+ parties, under the pretext of a drug raid, local media reported.

Eyewitnesses told journalists that clubgoers’ documents were checked and photographed by the security services. They also said that managers had been able to warn patrons before police arrived.

The higher the number, the greater the government’s justification for compelling polluters to reduce the emissions that are dangerously heating the planet. During the Obama administration, White House economists calculated the social cost of carbon at $42 a ton. The Trump administration lowered it to less than $5 a ton. Under President Biden, the cost was returned to Obama levels, adjusted for inflation and set at $51.

The new estimate of the social cost of carbon, making its debut in a legally binding federal regulation, is almost four times that amount: $190 a ton.

Methane is not as widely discussed as the carbon dioxide that results from burning fossil fuels, but it has become a rare area of progress this week at the global talks.

It is the second-most abundant greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide. Methane only lingers in the atmosphere about a decade after it is released, but it is about 80 times more powerful in the short term at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, which remains in the air for centuries.

Basically: oil firms didn't care about methane released into the atmosphere unless it reached concentrations high enough to cause fires and explosions. So there's a history of things like oilfield equipment powered by releasing compressed methane, as well unfixed leaks and unlit flares. The Inflation Reduction Act has a tax on large-scale methane release by the oil and gas industry, so now there's a lot of interest in finding and fixing leaks.

Are you the daring sort? Try our latest experiment: https://daring.lemmy.fan. Daring Lemmy Fans is an instance separate from the main lemmy.fan instances and runs the latest, bleeding-edge version of Lemmy available. This means that it may be unusable, broken, slow, or down for an extended time. We may need to roll-back the database. Anything is possible at Zomb--daring.lemmy.fan

So why use it? Daring.lemmy.fan is federated. It's a great place to test out apps on the latest version of Lemmy. It allows people to check out Lemmy's latest feature set.
