Having spent much of my life around nerds, I do believe he may be dumbfounded by the reactions to his new role in MAGA. Nerds tend to be very good at some things by virtue of hyper-focusing on them, while simultaneously being oblivious to many others. Add to that the fact that his circles and social media feeds must be filled with MAGA ideology and fans for whom he can do no wrong and what you get is someone whoβs probably feeling like heβs doing good.
He's good at disregarding his fellow human beings' wellbeing to hoard wealth. And at throwing tantrums when people don't suck up to him.
Well that is probably where Trump and Musk are most alike.

Awareness is not a binary. He probably has moments when he's painfully aware of unpopularity e.g. on stage with Chappelle. We all live in some kind of bubble, it would be intolerable not to. His trajectory is common to someone like a rebel leader who becomes a dictator and eventually a tyrant where he's despised by everyone except the few people around him. They typically recede from public life but never let go of power.

I don't think the problem is a lack of heart, but rather a lack of brain.
I remember something like almost 20 years ago, reading an interview article with him after his first wife? girlfriend? dumped him. I think it was in Rolling Stone. Anyway, the dude was nowhere near as (in)famous as he's become. And basically the interviewer wrote that Musk seems to want to be loved, but also seems incapable of being lovable. Or something along those lines.
I'm sure part of it has to do with shitty parenting. I mean, just look at his dad. Same thing with Trump too. For such emotional and psychological damage, I can at least pity both of them. It is sad that impressionable young children in need of love and security don't receive that from the most important people in their lives. But my pity ends when they take their daddy issues out on literally everyone else around them rather than go to therapy.

Like, we can see in real time the damage done by shitty family life and even the fundamental skewing of an entire worldview and empathy-spectrum due to wealth. And, if these dudes weren't causing so much damage to everyone around them because of that, I would pity them more. They're some of the most obvious cases of "hurt people hurt people." But I am also finite, and so my empathy goes more to the people they are hurting.
Yes he really does understand why people hate him. He has enough awareness of the effects of his actions to realize that he is destroying people's lives and his policies are killing people in real numbers. He also has enough awareness to realize that those things don't make human beings particularly happy.
Saying "Fuck you, Elon!" is positive, informative and beautiful.
