So, people who would have no interest in seeing the world of Borederlands adapted to a new medium?

"Hey guys, wanna buy my new Indiana Jones game? It's meant for people who don't like Indiana Jones, or games for that matter.. What no? Why not"

(Note: The new Jones game actually looks good, it was just the first IP to come to mind)

These people do realize that the Mario movie had an entire segment dedicated to Mario Kart, which is like.. the most popular Switch Game right? And the Sonic movies stayed true to the characters and had tons of little easter eggs for Sonic fans, even had some comic book tie-ins for the movie?

Just saying, when you cater to fans, fans will buy a product and show it to their friends and family saying "Oh hey, you know I'm a big fan of X. Well this is a good entry point for it if you wanna see what it's like."

Seriously I got a friend of mine who "Was too old for video games when Sonic came out" but had "Seen some fanart here and there he enjoyed" (I'm a furry, inter-generational friendships are kinda normal in that fanbase), but he saw the Sonic movie on my recommendation and it had him asking me for recommendations.. Before I knew it he had purchased Sonic Adventure DX on Steam to learn more about Tails and Knuckles' characters to get ready for the second movie, and Sonic Generations as well to get a quick run through of the hedgehog's history in general.

This man is a Catholic dad who's always busy with work, his kid, and his faith, but he found the time to love that Hedgehog, because they made a good movie that catered to fans. (Yes, Christians can be furries, the Christian Fur demographic is actually pretty big. Fun story, the fanart he'd been talking about was a comic about Tails becoming a Priest and later trying to help Sonic stave off Chili Dogs for Lent)

What I'm saying is, if you're good to your fans, they'll be good to you, and if people see a happy crowd they'll want to join that happy crowd. Love makes the world go rounder than money does, and as a chubby chaser I do like round things... I forgot the point I was making as now I just have the Queen song "Fat-Bottomed Girls" stuck in my head.

Yes actually

"The new X thing isn't meant for YOU!111"

Is a common line the media pulls out when the product is failing or have poor reception. Don't take responsibiliy for the company fucking up, that implies the company is capable of doing wrong. Just shame fans for liking a property and wanted to see it respected. Call them bigots and say the problem is the thing they like is bigoted!

It's... absolute bullshit.

Sadly it works, people who aren't well-informed think of the fans of X are just assholes and the new thing is good actually...

It also doesn't work because the people who aren't well informed weren't fans of X, so they're not seeing/playing the new X thing....

Meaning I guess the The New X thing wasn't really for anybody.... "Literally no one" is a strange demographic to market it to.

See: Skullgirls censoring their game in order to "appeal to a wider demographic", outlets claiming Skullgirl fans who hate the changes are "secretly pedophiles", aaaaand... Now the game has a dwindling player count, the Steam forums are reduced to asking when the game will be fixed, and the original creator who was not involved with the censorship has a defamation lawsuit going because a lot of people called him a diddler...

It also works the other way around, when something the big corporations DON'T want to be popular is, just slander it as bigoted

See Also: That time Cuphead fans shat on a game journalist for not being able to clear an overly easy tutorial, so the oulet he worked for tried to save his street cred by.... claiming Cuphead was racist and a front for antisemitism.... Which the Cuphead fanbase just kinda laughed at because it's an asinine claim.

It really sucks because as somewhat of a social justice activist and a gamer, well... "Clowns to the right of me, Jokers to the left of me..."

Sidenote: Can we stop the trend of neutering female characters? Seriously bought a fucking Avengers comic the other day (I mostly read Sonic, but I'll pick up the occasional Marvel from time to time if I think the story looks interst) and I didn't realize till after I paid for it that the "Thor" on the cover was actually Captain Marvel.... all I saw at first was "Blonde, Masculine Face, Masculine Build. I guess that's a new Thor costume? I dunno, don't keep up with it."

Got to reading it in the car and realized "Oh shit, that's actually Captain Marvel. Sorry about that Carol.", this didn't impede my enjoyment of the book mind you. I like Captain Marvel and Thor, so it's all good...

Look she doesn't need to pull a Power Girl and have tits the size of her head hanging out of her costume, but I feel like the de-sexualization of female characters has gone far beyond combatting the male gaze and is now reaching the "Dear God, can't let people see her ankles!" stage, which is actually more sexist than keeping the ridiculous chain mail bikinis in the first place, as it implies that traits we consider feminine are inherently sinful and should be hidden from view.

I mean, I know the example I used was a comic, but this shit is happening in games too. I'm a woman and a gamer, games are my power fantasy, me being highly attractive is PART of my power fantasy. Stop making me not hot damn it!

Sorry it's just... Kotaku's complacent for creating the environment this happened in, and we're talking about Kotaku so I felt like airing a grievance of mine.

He got a lot of money to be Bowser in a movie that made a lot of money, desperate film makers wanting to get in on the "Video Game Movie" trend thinking it's the next "Super Hero Movie!" trend hire Jack Black thinking he's the sole reason for Mario's successful movie and not just a component of it.

..and Jack Black's just taking the check and not correcting them.

Don't blame him, he's just grabbing that bag.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 hours ago

Reminder: Jack Black broke up Tenacious D to try to save this thing

and...

"Oh, no see, you're mad, but you see this version of the franchise isn't for you. It's for a new crowd that was alienated by the previous version and you need to be nice and let them have their..."

Shut the fuck up, if it's a version of a thing made for people who are defined by not liking the thing, it's not going to get the other crowd to like the thing, it's just going to piss off the people who do like it...

To be fair there are a lot of factions that accept Climate Change as a reality, they just think it's a good thing because the end of the world means they go to Heaven and their enemies go to Taco Bell

It's definitely nowhere near a PG-13

It's basically just Blazing Saddles, only it's about a village of cats in an Eastern Setting who are protected by a Samurai, guy wants an excuse to destroy the town, realizes that if the town kills an official Samurai he can destroy the town... So he pulls a sneaky and hires a naive dog with a desire to become a samurai to be one in a world where cats are racist against dogs.

It backfires when the dog is good at his job enough to dissuade the bigots

They tried to make a modern Heathers.. and it REALLY didn't work.

Mel Brooks did an animated movie called the Legend of Hank that was more or less a kid friendly remake of Blazing Saddled to prove he could make it today.

There is a tendency for real doctors with backing from Academia or whoever's in charge of deciding how you science to just plain getting it wrong and not realizing it for a long time.

Homeopathy is a good example of this, as it appeared to get great results when it was created during the Bubonic Plague and had such staying power to the point that in the 1800's it was considered a legitimate and mainstream field of medical practice.

Now today we know Homeopathy is nonsense... Remembers New Age Healing is still a thing Okay, those of us with sense know homeopathy is garbage. With the only reason it was getting such wonderful results was because the state of medicine for a long period of time in human history was so god awful that not getting any treatment at all was actually the smarter idea. Since Homeopathy is basically just "No medicine at all", that's exactly what was happening with its success.

Incidentally this is also why the Christian Science movement (Which was neither Christian nor Science) had so many people behind it, people were genuinely living longer from it because it required people to stop smoking at a time when no one knew smoking killed you.

Anyhow. With that in mind, I want to know if there's a case where the exact opposite happened.

Where Scientists got together on a subject, said "Wow, only an idiot would believe this. This clearly does not work, can not work, and is totally impossible."

Only for someone to turn around, throw down research proving that there was no pseudo in this proposed pseudoscience with their finest "Ya know I had to do it 'em" face.

The closest I can think of is how people believed that Germ Theory, the idea that tiny invisible creatures were making us all sick, were the ramblings of a mad man. But that was more a refusal to look at evidence, not having evidence that said "No" that was replaced by better evidence that said "Disregard that, the answer is actually Yes"

Can anyone who sciences for a living instead of merely reading science articles as a hobby and understanding basically only a quarter of them at best tell me if something like that has happened?

Thank you, have a nice day.

This is a bit of a rant, but please try to stick with me through the whole thing

So recently OSRS (Old School Runescape) has joined a list of games that have replaced "Male or Female" with "Body Type A or Body Type B" with you selecting your pronouns secondary.

And it made me furious, but I had to sit down and ask why such a small meaningless thing that I only see during the character creator pisses me off. After all, isn't this giving a seat at the table for Gender Non-Conforming/Non-Binary individuals?

So I tried thinking about this issue from the perspective of a Non-Binary individual. See I myself am female (Transgender MTF for what it's worth), so the only thing I'm ever going to pick is the female option unless I'm doing a challenge run where I try to roleplay Guybrush Threepywood (Mighty Pirate!) while playing Fallout 3...

That's when I realized why I absolutely hate Body Type A/Body Type B

This is not a solution to a problem, this is highlighting the issue.

As a woman, I look at "Body Type A or Body Type B" and think "Well, I'm a woman, not a Body Type B, and isn't it kinda misogynistic that the secondary option is the female one? Like A+ for Men, B- for Women?"

As someone is very much not cisgender, I look at it and go "Well, isn't every FTM going to pick Body Type A with male pronouns while MTFs like myself go with Body Type B with female pronouns? Who outside of a Far Right Troll trying and failing to be funny is gonna pick the buff bearded dude and select the she/her pronouns?"

It was only when I went "Let's pretend I don't exist in a male/female binary and see how I feel about it." that I realized why I absolutely DESPISE Body Type A/Body Type B

Because when I look at it from that angle, I realize that if I am a non-binary individual, my options are to look like an overly buff dude but occasionally NPCs will refer to me as a They/Them, or like an overly curvy chick who again sometimes gets called They/Them....

That's when I realized why Body Type A/Body Type B doesn't do it for me.

Games that do this aren't being progressive or inclusive, they're changing the color of the cup that my drink comes in and pretending it's an entirely new beverage.

I realized that if the choices in Body Type were something like

A - Buff Dude

B - Slim Dude

C - Fat Dude

D - Skinny Androgynous Individual who doesn't need a bra/binder

E - Fat Androgynous Individual who doesn't need a bra/binder

F - Skinny Androgynous Individual who requires bra/binder

G - Fat Androgynous Individual who requires bra/binder

I - Curvy Chick

J - Buff Chick

K - Fat Chick

L - Slim Chick

Maybe have also an option for a big buff masculine dude who has big tits, because that's just how he rolls, I dunno just thinking aloud here....

My point is that gaming could abandon "A/B" in favor of something more like an actual spectrum of Height, Weight, and Gender Presentation instead of just awkwardly renaming the binary? I wouldn't get so up in arms about gender replacing body type.

I don't know what more I have to say on this. I guess it's just a revelation I had about something in gaming that bothers me..

So, wider gaming community. What do you think? Am I onto something or is this all crazy talk?

I played a little of it when I first got it, but then I heard that it's better to patch it. So I joined the discord for it and figured I'd look into that later. Well later turned into years, eventually I left the discord server to make space for other servers and never did wind up going back to Arcanum.

Now I'm really getting into Fallout thanks to the show, and I've heard many people say that if I like Fallout to try Arcanum.

So I tried to get back into the Discord, however I found I've been banned. Which is odd, it's not like I got into a bad situation with an admin or anything. I pretty much never interacted with anyone. So I can only assume they saw that I was there for so long and assumed I was a bot (Or maybe someone got a DM from me back when my account was hacked), and I can't get a hold of anyone to get back in.

I've heard that if I want to enjoy the game to find the multiverse edition, but apparently that's hosted on the Discord I can't get into.

Is it worth trying to track down an alternative means of playing that patch? And is the game really as good as they say?

Thanks in advance.

Yours Truly, Queen HawlSera

I've heard there's a way to get this game, DOA Xtreme Venus Vacation on Steam if you use a VPN to say you're from singapore...

I was a big fan of DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball back in the day so I'd like to snag this title, but.... I'm worried if I do Steam will ban my account

I can't seem to find a straight answer on if this is safe or not. What do you say Lemmy?

So a couple months back I was randomly approached on Steam from someone claimed to be someone from a company called Maple Leaf Studio looking for playtesters for a game of theirs, and that because I had so many hours in Hades and Cult of the Lamb I'd be perfect for it.

I at first thought this was some kind of scam like those "Bro, join my TF2 team, sign up through this website, we can win so much money bro! Totally not stealing your account information!" (Especially since they kept flipflopping to being from Leap Studio to Maple Leaf Studio, wasn't clear which they were from)

But I heard them out and saw they were legit, so they had me sign an NDA and I got a Steam Key for an early build of their game Realm of Ink. It's pretty cool, not much I can say because of how early the build I played was... but I would say it plays a lot like Hades.

The gimmick seems to be that you have this pet made of ink that changes to a different animal with a different fighting style depending on what power-ups you grab, and other than that seems to play a lot like Hades if you're into that. It was pretty fun and kind of exciting, I had never done anything like this before since I'm not some big youtuber.

The graphics are pretty cool too, there's this Eastern theme, and the whole game looks like it was drawn on an old Chinese scroll of some kind.

Anyway, one of the members of the dev team I'd been reporting bugs and suggesting ideas for (I suggested an easter egg where you could light campfires that were strewn about the stages by using a fire based attack, I don't know if they added that in), told me that I was free from the NDA and was allowed to openly talk about it, so I figured I'd make a post here and signal boost the game... Especially since an updated version of the demo I played is now public and can be downloaded from their Steam page (link here - https://store.steampowered.com/app/2597080/Realm_of_Ink/)

For the record don't ask me questions about future plans for the game or its development history, I do not work for them, I make no money off of the game, the game isn't even out yet, and I don't know if there's a release date, I just wanted to talk about my first experience playtesting a game intended for commericial release and share the demo now that it's public

I got it expecting to hate it, but as I kept playing, I found myself legitimately enjoying it. Not begrudgingly enjoying it, not enjoying it outside of one or two small details, but actually being engaged in the story and gameplay. Which leads me to wondering why people had a problem with this game in the first place again?

I only knew Us for a tutorial I kept reloading until I was sure what was up with the brain, but if anything ever happened to him (I'm guessing he's a he?) I would kill everyone in the Forgotten Realms, and then myself.

I bought Mega Man X Dive Offline, really hyped for it, but then when I double checked my VPN, I realized it was set for the Netherlands.... Not good, I thought I had it set for the US as per usual.

Now it still showed the price in USD, but now I'm paranoid, I put in a refund explaining the situation and promising I'd buy it with the VPN turned off this time..

How fucked am I?

Recently got a VPN because I've become increasingly paranoid (It's getting crazy out there), but.... is it a bannable offense to use it while on Steam?

I'm finding mixed answers, and I wanna be safe, so I figured the Fediverse might know.

So here is the issue, I use Google Drive because I am a writer who does a lot of writing. And I thought the cloud was a reliable way to store my writing, however now Google is looking through it's to train their ai. And I'm worried about that, especially since I have written a lot of questionable content, porn and the like. What if Google Now arbitrarily decides that I'm not using Google Drive properly and bans me from the Google, that's not good. What should I do and what alternatives can I use? Will these Alternatives still be around in like 10 years?

Doing Egg Chains for fun, what are some worth pursuing? Thanks

Playing Sword's DLC, when I get Violet, I want to trade over some Pokemon that know egg moves. Level 1 of course, to keep it fair.

Any suggestions?

So far I have Delibird with Ice Shard, Happiny with Present, but not sure who else to shoot for.. or if Happiny is even in the Violet Pokedex
