Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

MODERATORS

They should use maybe 3/4ths of the amount of flavor they do. It's overwhelming, and burns my tongue if I eat large amounts of them in one sitting.

That being said, I don't eat junk food much anymore anyways. Prices are sky high, portions are pathetic, and it's not like I wouldn't be he healthier without it.

Oh, right.

I can't.. I.. brain sizzling

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Not unpopular. Everyone has different preferences.

I'm sorry about that delicate constitution. Must be hard.

Try some Takis, they're a little more mellow.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago

The enormous amount of flavoring is like the whole point

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Similar, but I always argued that whatever toxic combination of chemicals they use, is too distant from what most people would call “flavoring”. There was a short period in my teens when I could eat Doritos but they just don’t bear enough resemblance to food. The chemicals mostly burn my mouth and I don’t even know what “cool ranch” is supposed to be flavored like

If I want chips, I’ll get Tostitos Scoops and some fresh Pico de Gallo

Edit: And, yes, I love spicy food but this is more like a chemical burn than a hot pepper

Right, 'cause of the Doritos.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I mean if they stopped putting as much stuff on the chips, other people would buy less of them too. That would cut into their market share. They can't have that.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

What if it actually makes people buy more doritos since it's harder to reach your daily intake of dorito flavoring? It's economics 101.

Username fits

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

They have been gradually using less and less flavor on the regular ones imo. I've noticed that the cool ranch ones have far more dust than the regular ones.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

I absolutely love using doritos as like a crunchy topping for a casserole or something, but never just eat them. I like to be able to taste things.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago

I kinda understand where you're coming from, but strong disagree. Maybe it's just that I usually eat Doritos with cottage cheese which dilutes the MSG tsunami, but I love their overdone spicy "cheese" flavor.

Anyway, this seems to be truly unpopular, so you get a upvote.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

I love doritos as well, and I find that most bags are okay for seasoning, but then you get the "oh god this is the bag with ALL the seasoning" and it's just gross when it's so much. Or some chips that are like plastered and I can't stand it being so much. Most of the time though? Tear through an entire bag yeah!

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 month ago

The problem is you remember eating it as a kid. Drinking lots of Coke/Pepsi/mountain dew, hostess cakes, and all that other over flavored, ultra processed food covered with sugar and salt.

Now, as you've grown, your taste buds aren't used to the barrage and it's just too much to enjoy the nostalgia. Probably because they've steadily increased the additives to make it more appealing to an increasingly desensitized palette.

I feel the same way. I eat much healthier, feel better, and save nostalgia for movies instead of food.

I'm actually surprised this is an unpopular opinion. I guess a lot of people here are early 20s? It's easier to get back into the processed enjoyment mode then, maybe.

I was just thinking the other day that “man, i taste corn chip, where is my cool ranch at?”

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

To add to this, Harvest Cheddar Sun Chips > Nacho Cheese Doritos.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I haven't had those in forever!!! I should get some......and IMMEDIATELY put them in a much quieter bag. Have you heard those bags? It's like they're intentionally designed to annoy everyone around you just by existing. Definately not library food.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Put your chips in a bowl and live like an adult. It’s a game changer.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

eh.....then I have to wash another dish. I don't even make sandwiches. I just grab a fistfull of turkey lunch meat and stuff it in my face. Goes well with a squirt of bbq sauce.

Right after an engaging game of nightcrawlers

You have my vote because your valid opinion is actually very unpopular. I hate it. Congratulations.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It’s funny that this falls under the unpopular opinion area. Specifically since the original Doritos were nowhere near this spiced and/or coated. I’m not even that old and remember as a child the white top bag. “Nacho” if I recall for my area. It was the perfect amount but instead of covering the family they went with maxing out the kids in terms of flavor.

Edit: I am with on this one. Forgot to mention that.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

I hate to upvote this.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

Like with all chips, the seasoning isn't the problem - it is the absurd amount of salt.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Is mayonnaise spicy to you?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Spicy Mayo is called Ranch. Change my mind

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Ranch can have mayo in it, but it is not itself msyo.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

You're beyond help

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

This might be the first time I'm actually in the know on a reference 🍻

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago

Its not spicy. It's just gross.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Flavor seasoning.

Is that like spaghetti pasta or is it closer to crab crustaceans?

[–] [email protected] -3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

People often distinguish between taste and flavour. Taste would be what you sense on your tongue. Flavour, would be what you sense in your nose.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Smell is is what your ears touch.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 month ago

What do you mean? Your ear and nose are connected in a way, but I've never heard of ears having an influence on smell.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago

It might be regional but the new cheddar jack doritos in the silver white bag are what you described. Still tons of flavor, but dialed back a bunch. To get around the burnt tongue thing, I portioned it out in sandwich bags so I could eat them for a while without the main bag going stale. Treat yo self.
