Welcome to Lemmy.fan!

This instance succeeds on one simple mantra: Be kind, and do unto others as you have done to yourself. Consider for a moment that we’re ALL on the the same rapidly-spinning, mostly-watery orb, hurtling through space at fantastic speeds, and trading metal and paper for our livelihoods. The unknown will always dwarf the known. Learning never ends. We may be experts in something, but no one person is an expert in all things.

Given that, here our are very simple

I’m visiting a rural part of the southern US, and I have noticed that about 2/3 of the houses outside the town have yards full of cars and tractors in various states of disrepair, as well as tons of other miscellaneous stuff. Why is that? Is it kind of a culture of self-reliance and a supply of spare parts? Some other reason?

Facebook mogul’s sudden appearance is increasingly typical of freewheeling West Wing during Donald Trump’s second term, which president has reportedly nicknamed ‘Grand Central Terminal’

Air Force leaders learned that lesson earlier this year when they arrived for a top-secret briefing with Trump in the Oval Office, which according to NBC News was scheduled for them to discuss plans for America’s sixth-generation fighter aircraft, dubbed the F-47 in a nod to Trump’s status as the 47th President of the United States.

As the generals were going over the details of the super-stealthy plane, which Trump has called the most advanced, capable and lethal combat aircraft platform ever built, they were startled by the appearance of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg popping into the Oval Office.

According to NBC, White House officials became concerned that Zuckerberg, one of the wealthiest men in the world, lacked the security clearance required to be present for talks about such a sensitive national security matter.

Jeremy Corbyn has hinted he could launch a political party alongside other leftwing independent MPs in an attempt to offer “an alternative” to Labour, before the next general election.

Speaking on ITV’s Peston programme, the former Labour leader confirmed discussions were under way among the Independent Alliance group of MPs that he co-founded last year.

Asked directly whether they were preparing to form a new party, Corbyn did not rule it out. “That grouping [of independents] will come together, there will be an alternative,” he said.

I don't know if this is common knowledge but I hadn't found anything on the web (for Windows specifically) that stated that this was possible.

I kinda badly want to fully switch to Linux in the short term but wanted to first properly test how different distros feel at these specs (and maybe try some basic gaming too); maybe someone that wants to do the same can find this post useful (I hope this is the right community to post to).

To do this I used QEMU, and had to edit the source code and recompile it to enable 240hz. Forcing higher refresh rates is surprisingly not that hard, I only had to edit a single line of code (hw\display\edid-generate.c, line ~390, set '75000' to '240000'). So far Mint, Fedora and KDE Neon work perfectly at that refresh rate (after adjusting mouse input polling rates), then I added a couple other nice features like shared clipboard and mouse device toggling (I tested q2pro and it wouldn't work with absolute mouse coordinates, and relative mouse was a pain to use in normal desktop browsing, so I had to find a way to toggle them if I didn't want to reboot the VM every time).

This is my very first lemmy post (hi fedi!), I wrote this lengthy blog post detailing how I did everything, hopefully I'm allowed to post it here (reddit traumatized me with the blanket banning).

A few cards that I read about.

RBC virtual card, seems to do what I need. But it's available for business use only.

Robinhood Gold Card, only in the states.

Wise, not sure if exact limits are available.

Context: I recently purchased a hotel stay where a merchant charged my card for the advertised price on their website, the amount was then refunded. Then another merchant charged my card a higher amount (a few hundred) all in a few seconds of the original transaction.

Edit: I found Wise provides limits on their virtual cards. I have yet to test how this works and if the transaction is declined for Insufficient funds, does anyone have experience with this?

CRIME Drone "narco sub" — equipped with Starlink antenna — seized for the first time in the Caribbean

Updated on: July 3, 2025 / 6:29 AM EDT / CBS/AFP

The Colombian navy on Wednesday announced its first seizure of an unmanned "narco sub" equipped with a Starlink antenna off its Caribbean coast.

The semisubmersible vessel was not carrying drugs, but the Colombian navy and Western security sources based in the region told AFP they believed it was a trial run by a cocaine trafficking cartel.

"It was being tested and was empty," a naval spokeswoman confirmed to AFP.

Manned semi-submersibles built in clandestine jungle shipyards have been used for decades to ferry cocaine north from Colombia, the world's biggest cocaine producer, to Central America or Mexico.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the criminal justice system. Law enforcement agencies are using it to predict crime, expedite response, and streamline routine tasks. One of the most promising applications can be found in body camera programs, where AI is transforming unmanageable archives of footage into active sources of insight.

AI can now analyze hundreds of hours of video in seconds. Early pilot programs suggest that these video-reviewing tools, when guided by human oversight, can uncover critical evidence that might otherwise be overlooked, reduce pretrial bottlenecks, and identify potential instances of officer misconduct. But these benefits come with risks. Absent clear guardrails, the same technologies could drift toward government overreach, blurring the line between public safety and state surveillance.

The line between public security and state surveillance lies not in technology, but in the policies that govern it. To responsibly harness AI and mitigate these risks, we recommend that agencies and policymakers:

  • Establish and enforce clear use policies. Statewide rules for body camera use and AI governance ensure consistency across jurisdictions, particularly in areas like body camera activation, evidence sharing, and public disclosure.
  • Pair technology with human oversight. AI should enhance—not replace—human decision-making. Final judgments must rest with trained personnel, supported by independent policy oversight from civilian review boards.
  • Safeguard civil liberties. Safeguards must be in place to protect individual rights, limit surveillance overreach, and ensure data transparency. For example, limiting facial recognition during constitutionally protected activities like protests will help ensure AI is aligned with democratic ideals.

With the right guardrails in place, AI can elevate body cameras from after-action archival tools to always-on intelligence tools, informing decisions in the moment, when it matters most.

Exclusive: Experts say use of heavy munition in Monday’s strike that killed dozens may constitute a war crime

The Israeli military used a 500lb (230kg) bomb – a powerful and indiscriminate weapon that generates a massive blast wave and scatters shrapnel over a wide area – when it attacked a target in a crowded beachfront cafe in Gaza on Monday, evidence seen by the Guardian has revealed.

In the video, several marked and unmarked Customs and Border Protection vehicles can be seen pulling into the parking lot as several apparently armed agents got out of the vehicles.

School officials in Pico Rivera are calling for a federal investigation after immigration enforcement officers were seen on surveillance video appearing to urinate in the campus parking lot.

The incident happened on the morning of June 17, at Ruben Salazar High School in Pico Rivera. The El Rancho Unified School District shared surveillance video from the school parking lot on YouTube on Wednesday.

Over the next few minutes, nearly a dozen agents are seen walking to a part of the parking lot, near a couple of shipping containers. The agents seem to reach for their pants while walking to covered areas, stand still for several moments, then walk away. The district says school staff saw the agents peeing.

ICE agents exposed themselves to staff in a parking lot next to a preschool playground and an in-session elementary school. These agents need to be identified and prosecuted just like anyone else would be in such circumstances.
