Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. decided to keep control over its Polish unit after ending a strategic review which included options to sell TVN SA. 

The fate of TVN’s 24 television channels, including one of the country’s most-watched news networks, has become a political hot-potato in the nation bordering war-torn Ukraine. Tensions over the potential sale escalated further ahead of Poland’s presidential election, which will be held next month, with a probable run-off set for June. 

“We decided that the optimal option is for TVN to remain within WBD’s structures and develop our business within one group,” Warner Bros. said in a statement published on a TVN website on Monday.

Sony Group Corp. raised the price of its PlayStation 5 console by around 25% in Europe and in the UK ahead of a likely US increase.

The company announced the decision on its PlayStation blog, with Australia and New Zealand also affected, citing inflation and “a backdrop of a challenging economic environment.” The PS5 will cost €500 in Europe and £430 in the UK from Monday.

The Trump administration has excluded smartphones from its steep “reciprocal” tariffs as it battles to calm global markets by tempering its approach to the multifront trade war launched by the president. 

According to a notice posted late on Friday night by Customs and Border Patrol, which is responsible for collecting tariffs, smartphones, along with routers and selected computers and laptops, would be exempt from reciprocal tariffs, which include the 125 per cent levies Donald Trump has imposed on Chinese imports.

Some of the main candidates in Poland’s presidential elections took part on Friday evening in one or both of two televised debates that were organised at the last minute in the same town, resulting in a chaotic five hours of viewing.

The bizarre situation meant that, right up until the debates began, it was not clear who would participate in them and what format they would take. (…)

Trzaskowski wanted just Poland’s three main stations: the private Polsat and TVN plus public broadcaster TVP. However, Nawrocki additionally wanted two conservative channels, Republika and wPolsce24, to be involved.

Meanwhile, other presidential candidates (there are so far 13 official candidates in total) complained that it was unfair for just Trzaskowski and Nawrocki to be given televised debates.

Some also claimed that TVP was violating its statutory role as a public broadcaster by organising a debate for only two candidates. However, TVP announced that it was Trzaskowski’s campaign that was organising the debate, not any TV station. It noted that TVP will host a debate for all candidates on 12 May. (…)
