Not exactly related (although it's possible the feds will recruit them or they'll do it of their own accord), but how far could any socialist (even demsoc) take their agenda with the NYPD threatening them? They're better funded than many armies and they're full of chuds, I can't imagine how easy it would be for them to kill the mayor or allow a shooter to get him or his family. I almost feel like he'll need his own security guards, which seems unrealistic given the magnitude of the force against him

Hold up though, just like you said there is plenty he can do besides reduce officer headcount. Cut overtime, cut equipment funding, "special assignments" that aren't on the street, close the international offices, no increase in headcount, no increase, or possibly a decrease in overall budget, etc...
These things are all "defunding the police" and directing resources to actually useful city services, but he's doing it the slow and kinda centeristy way (NYC centrist, so between liberal and socialist) so that NYC lib voters don't have a reason to lose their minds since he's clearly said "you will have the same number of officers in the department". Ofc national media will smear all they want but he can just say that over and over again to the people he's actually trying to get votes from and grind out his victory. I
