We always hear about song lyrics that we deeply connect to on a personal level, but what about ones that are the opposite of your experiences and/or vibe? I'll start first:

"I got money in the bank."

If I could've become a Rap God, life could be slightly different. One cool smaller rapper even redid that song to his tune: https://youtu.be/l6hECLQQNz8

Literally all of Ke$ha's Tik Tok. I have never woken up feeling like p diddy, nor have i brushed my teeth with a bottle of jack daniels, and I sure as shit don't exclusively date guys that look like Mick Jagger

Bastard son of Odin
Born to kick your ass

My father was both married and not a Norse god upon my birth. I'm pretty sure I wasn't even divinely fated to kick ass. I just don't know what to do with this song.

I grew up listening to a lot of old-school country music. Listening to it as an adult with an understanding of mental illness is horrifying and hilarious.

I’m on a boat

I’m actually not on a boat :(

[–] [email protected] 10 points 9 months ago

That one was played at least once per shift when I worked on a boat.

If you like piña colitas, getting caught in the rain.

I like neither of these things.

Are you into cheating through classified adds in the newspaper?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Naw, I use Craigslist for that.

Seriously, who likes getting caught in the rain?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

If you don't have electronics or papers to worry about, it's genuinely very good fun. I love it!

From "Losing It" by Rush

"Some are born to move the world to live their fantasies, but most of us just dream about the things we'd like to be" was a lyric in the album following Moving Pictures which was Rush's biggest album and they firmly sat in the former category at that point in their careers. Still my favorite band though

"I'm happy" - Pharrell Williams

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago

..and not even 'because I am never happy'. It is the melody that is nothing like happy and hearing it makes me unhappy.

Every time I'm listening to "getting better" by the Beatles and hear "I used to be cruel to my woman, I'd beat her" and then they sing about getting better I instantly turn off.

Even when I was a kid I was like wait so he still beats his wife but like not as often?

What the f*** and who beats their wife anyway and how is that in this song and it just bothers me to no end every time I have heard that song for the past my entire lifetime.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 9 months ago (7 children)

"All that 'I used to be cruel to my woman, I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved' was me. I used to be cruel to my woman, and physically - any woman. I was a hitter. I couldn't express myself and I hit. I fought men and I hit women."

John Lennon

I just keep coming back to the whole playlist of songs I made the other day that are from the perspective of psychos, murderers, or rapists. Totally unrelatable; but are also cool songs. Like Polly by Nirvana, Possum Kingdom by The Toadies, and Still Alive by Johnathan Coltan.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago

Tyler by The Toadies has similar psycho vibes to it.

"I dont know why I love you, I just do." -Jaymay

That's fucking terrifying, but my wife thinks it's romantic.

A slab of turkey-neck and it's hanging from a pigeon wing

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

Consider yourself lucky. I definitely would not recommend being in that situation.

"Sex by the fire at night"
-That's what i like, Bruno Mars

Other than being single, uhh i'm in a tropical country and there's no fireplace. But yes mostly being single.

"🎶I'm proud to be an American🎶" from the self-titled song.

Don't get me wrong - I really want that song to be relatable again, but right now and for many years it hasn't been.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

"Where at least I know I am free I stand up, next to you.."

That song is so goofy that me and my friends (we are third worlders) put it up ironically while playing minecraft and sing along with an american accent and the lyrics are ingrained to my brain for that reason, lmao.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (2 children)

We had to sing that song in 4th grade, when the US invaded Iraq. Every. Damn. Morning.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 months ago (2 children)

"I pledge alleigance. To the flag..."

Oof. If it's any consolation, I'm cringing with you across time and space.

I was in high school and then college during that era, so I guess I was lucky to avoid the forced patriotism.
