Let's say that hypothetically someone flew an fpv drone right up to your bedroom door, which is accessible from outside the building, during the middle of the night at 11pm.

What do?

How big a drone? If it's over 250g it has remote id and you can get its info using an app on your phone. Smaller drones don't require it though.

Interfering with a drone directly is a bad idea - legally they treat those things as aircraft so you can't just shoot it down if it's flying outdoors, even over your property. Unless it goes indoors. FAA doesn't control indoors.

Depending on the state, this could be a perfectly legal recreational drone flight. A lot of state laws really haven't caught up with drone technology. See your local laws here https://www.findlaw.com/consumer/consumer-transactions/drone-laws-by-state.html

Sorry, how do you get their info?

I don't know the weight just by sound, it was night so I didn't get a good look at it. I have cameras for security and early warning but they're all covering paths on the ground, I've moved some around though to get a view that covers the air too so if it comes back again I'll have footage.

Ahh, problem. This is the UK.

Oh yeah everything I said applies to US only. Don't know anything about UK drone laws, but a cursory search suggests that remote id isn't even required there.

you need a flyer id and an operator id which must be displayed on the drone
if it's over 250 grams or under but has a camera and is not classified as a toy at least

the rules

Create a nuclear bomb, the emp shockwave will disable it when detonated

Or shoot it with a paintball gun with or without ball bearings

Purchase Pantsir-S2 air defence system

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 hours ago

Very bright lights, even a flashlight, might make the operator's video feed useless

do you organize publicly? i dont want to say the feds, but have you recently been in or done something that would make militant fascists very angry?

[–] [email protected] 18 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

Not to be "that guy", but are you 100% certain that's what it was? Did you get a close look at it, like 20 feet away or less?

I would get some 20 lb monofilament fishing line and hang it randomly near the windows.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 hours ago

Yeah it was that close to the building at least

This is a great idea. Invisible string curtain!

keep blinds shut/windows locked. Doors too. I dont want to seem callous or flippant but have you had any breakups recently that went south? Any hookups that maybe went bad? Any negative interactions w strangers recently? Stalkers?

Depending upon your location, it may be against rules laid out by whatever agency has authority over flights/flying in the country you live in. You might be able to report it (i know, i know, im talking about going to the feds or whatever) and depending upon what is nearby, said authority may investigate. If its a repeat thing they may be able to triangulate a controller signal. Do FPV drones broadcast an FCC ID/ FAA ID or equivalent? Some can be purchased as kits, as turn key or some can be assembled from parts. Id reckon there exists open source flight controller software that will allow one to fly a drone in unauthorized spaces. Im close to a US naval base and they take unathorized drone flights very seriously. Very seriously. I cants say too much because ill docs myself but im speaking from experience here.

Is it possible to snare it/corral it somehow, without causing yourself harm? Masons twine is quite durable, cheap, and a well aimed loose handful at low elecations might foul up a prop. A small lightweight length of chain from a hardware store could work for this too. Bird netting or fishing line strung back n forth might foul up a rotor.

Honestly, i think your options for recourse are pretty small. Its either get the feds/regulatory agencies involved or get creative and get the fkn thing out of the sky by any means necessary. Are doors and windows accessible by just taking a fire eacape or something similar? Keep the doors locked, the shades drawn and the windows locked.

Im sorry if im scaring you unreasonably; it might be a one off thing, some peeping tom has gone high tech. It might be someone looking for easy apartments/homes to break in to. It might just be someone saw you and human curiosity took over.

Stay safe comrade.

No there's no possibilities like that.

The only other possibility that's running through my mind is that it's police scoping out a polytunnel we have. It's possible that someone has told the police we're growing weed, but it's actually full of palm trees I've been growing for several years now.

It's UK, I have no idea what the laws are tbh.

This is actually pretty viable, maybe some fishing line run from ground to nearby trees. Wouldn't interfere with anything on the ground for people using the area but if you tried to fly something in there it would catch on something.

Looks like below 250g is fine, above 500g is "not within 50m of people this includes up to max height ceiling" ie anything above that size isn't allowed anywhere near towns/cities. Can't really find anything suggesting tracking though.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 51 seconds ago

every drone operator of drones under 250g with a camera or any over 250g needs to be registered with an operator id that needs to be displayed on the drone you can search the id here

Time to set up some Home Alone style traps

Just in case

[–] [email protected] 18 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

i'd like to be able to stop an fpv drone from coming into my garden at all

[–] [email protected] 17 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Only thing I can think of is bird netting

[–] [email protected] 15 points 9 hours ago

this

I'd put some "decorative" netting up above your door with a quick release. Free drone.

Beaded curtains will fuck the rotors up

[–] [email protected] 21 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (1 children)

It's got no chance getting inside. I'm just more concerned about why it scoped the place out. There's a bunch of possibilities ranging from cops to fash to random burglars.
