Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). 3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. 4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

What, exactly, should I be proud of?

A nation that is moving backwards on human rights, increasing wealth inequality, and got really "mask off" about supporting genocide. A nation that is inherently dysfunctional and wreathed in corruption.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 hour ago

To give you one example, there where a few million protesting against all that happening. Not sure if that falls under national pride, but it sure is societal pride.

"The car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel. And the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides

And a dark wind blows

The government is corrupt And we're on so many drugs With the radio on and the curtains drawn

We're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine. And the machine is bleeding to death. The sun has fallen down. And the billboards are all leering. And the flags are all dead at the top of their poles"

Dead Flag Blues

I'm gonna be blasting Godspeed all 4th of July

Good. Patriotism leads to nationalism, xenophobia, and racism.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 hours ago

Californian first.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 9 hours ago

Someone once said to me “the nation I belong to doesn’t exist yet”. I rather like the ring of it.

This is the result of the Republican party, starting at least with the Bush neocons, weaponizing patriotism to be a way to slander their critics, and to publicly demonstrate their allegiance to the conservative movement.

After a couple decades now of conservative pundits and politicians responding to criticism by implying their opponents don't love America as much as they do, or even trying to stifle conversation by demanding everyone profess their love of America on the spot, I think everyone else is pretty sick and tired of the flags and pins and stars-and-stripes punisher tee shirts.

I think everyone else is pretty sick and tired

From where the rest of us are standing, "everyone else" is WAY too comfortable with it. Inaction = acquiescence.

It's older than that. Nixon started it and Regan kicked is down the mountain.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago

We’ve been living in it. It’s happening.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 10 hours ago

I identify as a Californian first. My US passport holder has stickers of the Californian flag. Many Europeans may dislike the USA right now, but you tell them you’re from California, or they see a California flag sticker on your passport holder, wallet, or phone, and then they won’t be so icy.

Can confirm. Proud of my state (California) but almost zero pride left for my country. Trying to figure out if I should flee the continent or start building guillotines.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Same, minus the state pride (Georgia).

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 hours ago

Still got Atlanta at least? (Moved to Washington from GA a few years back)

[–] [email protected] 8 points 11 hours ago

What did we expect? Government is looking out for itself or anyone big enough to pay for a seat at the table.

Republicans appear to be driven by hate and ignorance of the things they do

Democrats appear to do nothing for the people either.

We have lost faith in the courts ability to stand up for the rule of law. Sure we protest. Yell at our elected officials but at the end of the day it seems like we keep picking the worst thing and diving head first.

I know I'm projecting a bit here but it's so exhausting to keep up and it wears us out

Sure keep voting for what you want and what not. Doesn't help with it's red vs blue and both sides are a shit sandwich and the only choice for sides are bigotry or compliances.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 12 hours ago

In order to feel patriotic you’ll have to have failed history.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 12 hours ago

I could have told you that without a poll. What a joke

[–] [email protected] 13 points 12 hours ago

Hopefully that sick overnationalism gets down to a sane level like it is in most civilzed countries. Imagine no adoring the flag and pledges of allegiances like one normally only sees in fascist dictatorships.

[–] [email protected] 50 points 12 hours ago

So, has anyone actually read the 1,000+ pages of the Big Bill?

Because if you did, I promise you wouldn't be celebrating a time America gained her independence knowing that our government is about to rewrite history just so they can have a big old tax break with the blood of Americans on their hands. Democracy was a nice 250-year project while she lasted, but she's at her end now thanks to the greed of a few, it appears.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 13 hours ago

...here's an article that misses the point, the one team's popularity is declining but the sport popularity is seeing an increase...

[–] [email protected] 25 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

That's generally how fascism works.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Don't they rely on increasing national pride and with it, national identity? They need a steady supply of useful idiots who buy into the bullshit.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 hours ago

I didn't say they were doing well, lol.

[–] [email protected] 40 points 13 hours ago

fuck this stupid country

[–] [email protected] 38 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

The bootlickers literally dipped in pride of America when Trump was voted out. Became more prideful when he got back in.

They have no capacity for critical thinking or competent understanding of anything at all. A bunch of knuckle dragging idiots.

[–] [email protected] 120 points 13 hours ago (4 children)

no shit, sherlock.

zero reason to be proud of a fascist government.

fuck the 4th of july.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

This. And I’m otherwise a very patriotic American veteran.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 hours ago

Great, so you're organizing with your fellow veterans to do something about it, right?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah. I'm not going to any celebrations of the country this weekend. I don't have it in me to be patriotic right now. It's wild how far we've fallen in the past decade. And flabbergasting how much further we fell over the last 6 months.

I never thought I'd literally be stocking up on ammunition over political shifts in the US. That's what the crazies on the right do.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 hours ago

Only reason I'm gonna set off fireworks is for my kid. He turned 5 in May and has been begging me to set off fireworks for the 4th.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

I just can't imagine 36% are still proud.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 hours ago

See the left side of the curve.:

[–] [email protected] 6 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Take a trip through flyover country (my hometown!), there are still loads of stupid people everywhere.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 hours ago

Oh, I believe it. I just can't imagine it.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Good point. And now I gotta go check if there are going to be more protests planned around here for the 4th.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 12 hours ago

I need to look for one as well 50501 is not showing one in my area.
