This is normal deer behavior. It only gets sketchy if they talk to you.

Pretty sure this is an SCP.
A secure copy?
That's a hell of an act. What do you call it?
Deeristocrats!
prion diseases are fucking brutal
It's possible that this is chronic wasting disease or something, but I'm more inclined to think it's bullshit.
Yeah, if its brains were everywhere, it wouldn't be able to walk to the river let alone on two legs.
Thing is people really don't know what brains look like or the force that would be required to crack the skull. I don't think a deer is capable of it.
BUT it very well could have cracked an antler and busted open a good wound and left a bloody mess that you might assume were brains.
But also this sounds like total BS.
Animals, and people, can and have continued to be alive and... somewhat, or even mostly functional... with portions of their brains obliterated or removed.
Go look up Phinneas Gage, or the history of lobotomies and brain surgeries.
Now, this person could be describing bloody chunks of the skull and skin and fur, but it is not strictly impossible that the deer could have actually managed to loose chunks of its actual brain, and still remain capable enough to keep functioning...
... for a while, at least. If it did really cave in its own skull, it would almost certainly die from cranial hemmoraghing soon afterward, if not that, infections.
ya'll ever hear about "Mike the Headless Chicken"? survived 18 months after a botched beheading left him his brain stem.
Ah yes, I heard about that one when I was a kid, forgot to mention it!
Damn headless chicken stayed alive for weeks... months I think?
It would walk around attempting to peck at things with a head it didn't have... they used a little dropper to squirt some mushed up food ... directly into its throat...
...and it actually died because one day it choked during this kind of feeding session, concievably it could have lived longer had that not happened.
Or at least thats the 'death account' I remeber my grandpa telling me, apparently there are multiple stories as to what exactly cause Mike to pass on.
Yeah that's really the part that makes me think it's exaggerated, misremembered, or just completely false.
Fair enough. If I witnessed a deer bashing its own brains out, I would definitely be so fucking freaked out my memory would be doing wild shit about the encounter, too. Filling in details that weren't there, not noticing that only part of the brain fell out, just completely unreliable.
It's probably referring to when deer shed their antler skin, but then the part where it gets up and walks into the river is probably made up from how metal the rest of the story is
Thats probably the most likely explanation for a deer attacking a tree for seemingly no reason, and messy chunks of flesh getting everywhere... but yeah, the standing on two legs thing....
... not strictly impossible, but... rather unlikely?
Deer can rear up on their hind legs, but I can't say I've ever heard of one that can actually... locomote, ambulate, walk in that manner.
Theoretically, one can move around with only the cerebellum remaining intact. For a short while at least.
Yeah, that is why I left a little wiggle room in my statements. But coordinated movements when the cranial cavity is so damaged that chunks of brain are spilling out? A deer's brain isn't even very large. There's hardly chunks to be had there. I dunno there's some chance that the deer was already dead and this is just some sort of postmortem spasms. But I am just doubtful over the whole thing as written.
I'm sure there's a set of circumstances that can make it possible, but yeah, people generally like to embellish our stories.
Prion diseases like that make deer do allllll sorts of kooky shit, man. Definitely possible.
It's otherwise possible, but actually having it stand up and be able to keep it's balance sounds like horseshit. (edit, it's not, they totally can) Also I don't think it intentionally bashed it's brains in to eat them, but I wouldn't be surprised they might when some spills. (And ai think OP would exaggerate, it'd probably be blood, but having some brain matter leak out isn't out of the question with it still being conscious, I think.
~~Like trying imaging a horse walking on two legs. It's just the anatomy doesn't really allow for it, even to the extent that cats and dogs do, which can do some steps.~~
Edit that was some utter bullshit guessing by me. Most wrong I've been about animals in a while, I think, got to own up to it.
Deer can absolutely stand on two legs, and even stumble around a bit. Here is an example, looks like it's in search of food:

Anyhow, I do agree it's very improbable, but the story is certainly possible, especially if you ignore the likely hyperbole about "brains everywhere".
Oh yeah, my bad. Totally proved me wrong there. Don't know why I thought they wouldn't. Perhaps my intuition thought more about massive horses, actually. I feel like they'd be too front heavy to pull anything like that off with their massive necks, but seeing how incorrect I was about deer, I wouldn't be surprised to learn I'm wrong in that, too.
Oh yeah. I totally am.

Agreed.
Well that horse is majestic af. I am going to go ahead and assume she enjoys performing the trick, otherwise I wish her luck in crushing her captors.
