Summary

Health and Human Services Secretary RFK Jr., despite his history of heroin addiction, supports ending a $56 million federal Narcan distribution program that helped drive a nearly 24% drop in U.S. overdose deaths in 2024.

The program, administered by SAMHSA, trained over 66,000 people and distributed 282,500 kits.

Critics warn that cutting Narcan funding could reverse life-saving progress, especially as fentanyl-related overdoses persist.

Kennedy argues the crisis requires deeper societal change beyond "nuts and bolts" solutions, while public health advocates condemn the move as dangerously premature.

Locked. This is not the forum for political commentary

The biggest public health issue we are facing is human stupidity.

The stupidity of many American citizens is a direct threat to our safety and well being.

These people want death. They are death worshippers.

[–] Snowclone@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

Fascism is a death cult.

[–] Altrex@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Truly, best I can tell, death is seen as the solution to many problems rather than, you know, solutions.

I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too.

This is the same man who once sawed the head off of a whale, strapped it to his roof, then forced his children to endure being rained upon by whale juice.

Just internalize that. This man is in charge of health

The only thing I can agree with him on is that people are eating too much unhealthy shit, and the food industry needs to do better.

Literally everything else out of his mouth is utter lunacy.

I'm sorry, what?

EDIT oh. But also still what?? Why???

[–] Illogicalbit@lemmy.world 23 points 1 month ago

Thought to myself, that can’t possibly be true, but then:

Kathleen Kennedy said when she was 6 years old, her dad got word that a dead whale had washed ashore. He got a chainsaw, cut off the whale’s head and strapped it to the roof of their minivan for a five-hour drive home.

At least it's not the same guy who dumped a dead bear in Central Park oh wait it totally is!

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 27 points 1 month ago

RFK, like the rest of the oligarchs, cannot appreciate how society allowed him to live his best life.

[–] WrenFeathers@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

He just summarily wiped out a large portion of the MAGA voting base in the southeast.

[–] Sarmyth@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Seriously though....

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 32 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Past? Have you drug tested him? Does he seem altogether put together?

[–] rayyy@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

Drugs? Did someone mention drugs? The white house is teeming with drugs and drug users. RFK Jr is sure to get a little drug splash accidentally, of course. Look, he hates McDonalds but there we was chowing down with Krasnov.

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Does anyone know how long Narcan's shelf life is? I have some but I want to know if it is worth stocking up

[–] SOB_Van_Owen@lemm.ee 10 points 1 month ago

My understanding is that it's quite long. I saw cited a 90% effectiveness at 30 years.

[–] Crikeste@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

Used to be 2 years, recently changed to 3. Not sure if that’s due to some ingredient change though, so you’re better going with 2 I’d say. But I’m also an idiot. lol

[–] peteyestee@feddit.org 20 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

We are being cleansed. It's pretty obvious isn't it?

Depopulation of the unwanted by those above us.

[–] match@pawb.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

it's not going to do that though

[–] MutilationWave@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

More opioid users will die. How is that not doing it?

[–] match@pawb.social 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

because the growing despair will lead to new opioid users, thus ensuring no depopulation

[–] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Unless those opioid users also start breeding like rabbits you'll still see a decline in population.

[–] GoodLuckToFriends@lemmy.today 6 points 1 month ago

So I have bad news for you... most of the opioid overdoses I have dealt with have had kids. So now you're getting the republican wet dream in multiple ways: hard times for the family who is left behind to care for the kids, if there is anyone. That means vulnerable kids, fucked up childhoods, and any adult is going to be much more stressed and not have much time on their hands. THAT means the pedophiles and abusers in the republicans can start having more opportunities, either through foster care environments or unattended kids. It means more kids getting into the foster system and getting dumped at 18, desperate for any job they can get, and oh, look, here's a minimum wage job in the mines, timmy, and you can live in this one room shack provided by the company. It means more kids who aren't going to be looked after by parents that encourage them to care about school, and now we have even more uneducated voters to feed into the republican propaganda machine.

It's all knock on effects, and it's not good.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I'm not sure you know how math works.

[–] dragonfucker@lemmy.nz 16 points 1 month ago (3 children)

deeper societal change

Like UBI? Or a reduction in work hours? Or education programs? This jerk won't do any of that.

[–] Zink@programming.dev 2 points 1 month ago

That sounds like a lot of work when you have the old reliable conservative tactic of pretending the problem doesn’t exist while blaming the ill effects of the not-problem on the personal responsibility of the victims. And their mental health. And other dog whistles that they are lesser subhumans who don’t deserve help.

[–] Grilipper54@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

He somewhat backed UBI when running for president. That idea is probably gone now under Trump but he wasn't against it not to long ago.
