Our galactic citizens have requested more specific rules, so here are a few.

The general idea is, if you're looking here for rules, you're probably someone who doesn't need to have them spelled out. You're fine. But anyway:

  1. This is a community for Star Wars memes. This means typically screenshots of Star Wars media with some text or context that's meant to be funny and/or thoughtful. All SW media is welcome: movies, games, comic books, fanart... Other kinds of content, like video links or meta memes (about this community, or Lemmy), are fine as well, just keep it on topic.

  2. We are all friends here, and love (sometimes love to hate) Star Wars. Be nice to each other.

  3. As fans of fictional media, we can be passionate. If you very strongly disagree with something or someone, take a deep breath before reacting. Anger leads to the dark side!

  4. Everything in Star Wars has happened a long time ago, in a galaxy far away, and it's a rich universe of millions of words and millions of years of history. So current Earthly matters really shouldn't concern us here. In other words, leave politics, philosophies and convictions behind the door. This applies even if it's about something related to Star Wars.

  5. Original content is preferred. Reposts are fine, just please limit to a maximum of 3 per day, per citizen. It is recommended, but not required, to mark original memes as (OC) and reposts as (repost).

  6. Local mods are the Jedi council. They may take actions that are necessary to maintain peace and stability of the Republic, even beyond the rules outlined here. Follow their guidance.

  7. Regular rules of the Lemmy.world instance apply.

yeah im about to hop off tiktok lol. every user that types a response is just dumber than the last. doesn't matter the video topic. Some 30 year experienced chef cooking? sorry, Fatweeny69 knows more than that guy. car driving down the road? sorry. smoldickmas will type 4 paragraphs how something was wrong while driving. it's getting so old lmao, and impossible to converse at all.

My friends download them then send. :)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I didn't know you could do that? I've been politely asking for a screen recording every time and just happily living with it and moving on if I hadn't got one

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

yeah. you hit the share button, then "save to phone"

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

Yeah told my girlfriend to try it (she sends me tiktoks from time to time) and it worked!

Also, someone else in this thread mentioned Tiknot in another xomment which is also a great idea

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

i dk how lol, i think theres websites to do it easy

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

When they fled to XHS:

No, it's fine, i just... i didnt think it would be chinese.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'm that friend, but I've started downloading tiktoks and send the video file instead of a link so I know they'll watch it

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

see, that's the last phase of the heroes journey. that's cool. more of that.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

Same here. Can't download video means it's not worthy of a share.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

I'd rather tiktok links than shitbook links. Most of my friends still suck the zuck nuts and refuse to leave, and share links instead of screen caps like a civilized person.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's why I use TikNot, so I don't have to use TikTok itself or have an account.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

WWWWHHHAAAT. Thank you, just heard of this now. I've beeb asking for screen recordings, gonna try and remember this from now on

I don't use that format of media usually but if someone sends me a TikTok I respond that I can't see it and send them one from Loops. It's the FOSS alternative that's in beta still I believe.

(The videos play for them without needing the app, and it introduces them)

Example in case you want to test: https://loops.video/v/75uYN53zBP

Cool! TIl about Loops. I think I'll start soing the same

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The app works just like TikTok from what I've seen off my partners phone. Just scroll, give a heart, share. (If there are other features to Tik Tok, they may be there, I am not familiar)

The homies are all on RedNote 小红书.

You tube links

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago

It's not a story that ByteDance would tell you.

I literally can't, because I've got tiktok DNS-blocked

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

same bro, shitter is also on that block list

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think they're intentionally blocking TikTok DNS records.

I do this for a number of sites so that the only way I can reach them is by intentionally turning on a VPN, bypassing my local DNS server (I self-host Pi.Hole), and visiting the blocked target.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

Yep that's right :) Intentionally blocked so I can never go there either accidentally or on purpose, and so any embeds or cross site tracking doesn't work.

Same for Facebook, X, and a bunch of others, also using pihole the same as yourself.

Simply better for my wellbeing to cut some of this out of my life.

I need to get a new source for memes. Using Reddit less and less and having access to meme sources would help the decline.

Not been on there for a couple of years, will give it another go, thanks!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

yeah... i really wish there was a FOSS alternative to reddit with tons of shitposting and quality memes, like how lemmy is a meme-filled FOSS alternative to... waitasecond.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

Hahah I left myself open to that but I mean the volume and breadth of memes in Lemmy is vastly less than on Reddit. I try to contribute what I can where possible but it’s miles away at the moment.

E.g. I can get metal memes, formula 1 memes, dank memes etc in quite high volumes there.

This is what I feel when I see a reddit link around here.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Every time I see a screenshot from there: "why are we giving them traffic for the screenshot?"

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

A screenshot doesn't give them traffic. A link does.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They had to go to reddit to get the screenshot. That is traffic. Not to mention all the people who see this post and the hop in over to leave a comment or read others.

Don't give them traffic, don't go there for the screenshot.

If you honestly think this isn't giving them traffic, you're ignorant or naive.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

Maybe, but there's also a more long-term force in the other direction. Bringing content from other platforms to Lemmy means that Lemmy has more content and people are less likely to go elsewhere to get their fill. If the best of Reddit is available on Lemmy, why bother going to Reddit? It's the same thing as how Reddit used to have lots of Twitter screenshots on it back when Twitter was worth screenshotting. The people taking the screenshots likely use both anyway and wouldn't stop if they weren't allowed to post Reddit stuff here.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The links don’t even work half the time and take me some random-ass video.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I've had that problem. But more often I have them correctly opening, but they start autoplaying muted by default. So I would have to frantically search for the unmute button or volume slider as fast as I can before I miss more than 2 or 3 sentences.

If it takes too long, then I probably didn't wanna watch it anyway. I always hated it because it would throw banners at me advertising the app, which I expressly do not want. I had it downloaded one time for about 10 minutes on my last phone, and felt the ick immediately.

I don't get them often, and typically only as discord channel messages. Lately they're embedded so I don't need to open them in a browser. It seems to be working now, but it was a mess for a while.

Exactly how Instagram works for me. I hate it when people link to Instagram videos.
