The last paragraph with the edit. MAGA enjoys tearing into residents of California, they voted to dismantle FEMA and despise Socialism, even though they use it. Zero sympathy.
Help isn't coming. Musks Government is going to based on ruling not governing. Musk said that empathy in government is a weakness. If he could (and possibly will) cut all social programs he would.
One, people don’t seem to realize that many of the places hardest hit by Helene, like Asheville and the immediate area, are bastions of liberalism who voted for Harris by a 2 to 1 margin
Unless it exclusively hit Buncombe county and avoided the surrounding counties, it did hit a region that actually predominantly voted for this.
it is horrifying to jeer for someone losing their home regardless of who they or their neighbors voted for.
On one hand I agree. On the other, it's much more horrifying that a track record of extorting governors for FEMA aid wasn't an immediate presidential dealbreaker.
These comments look like they're pulled from Facebook. I have been getting used to expecting Lemmy to provide a more empathetic and nuanced take on topics.
North Carolina is a purple state. With around five and a half million votes counted, the election was decided by 74,000, well within the margin of voter suppression and disenfranchisement.
Regardless, it takes an absurdly callous disconnectedness to look on a tragedy of that level without empathy.
It shouldn't require looking at vote totals to determine whether people are worthy of being treated with human decency in the wake of catastrophic trauma.
I mean Trump is cutting FEMA and pretty much every agency that serves the people. So it is pretty much like Leopards eating their faces after they voted exactly for leopards eating their faces.
I only hope that they will learn from this but we've also had hurricanes the last time Trump was in office and look how that turned out.
I think you have to buy a new Tesla to get that aid now.
In the NC mountains, besides the Asheville area, it's all Trump voters. Most of the mountains are very rural. There are normal people there but also the most "slack jawed yokel" types I've ever seen.
Boone is left leaning, so are many other little towns throughout WNC. It's not all trump voters. Not that that should matter when it comes to who receives federal aid for disasters.
there're gonna have to pry aid out of donald and elon's cold dead hands.
They are getting what they voted for. It's about time the red states face consequences for their actions
they will be waiting forever.
Thots and prayers. Maybe if they stop making eggs for breakfast they could afford to fix their homes.
Nope lol no handouts for you. You’re murican and conservative so get your asses additional jobs. Get your elderly out there in the fields. 5¢ bjs on your corners. You voted for this, so take it up the ass like you chose.
Did Donald Trump voters expect a handout from the federal government? Man, us Americans have to be one of the dumbest groups of people on the planet. So much stupid. I hate it here.
lol you are not going to get it now. FEMA will no longer exist. You got what you voted for.
Looks like they got what they voted for?
Not all of them no, Asheville is very blue
Weren't they chasing FEMA off with guns and stuff? And after that, didn't they vote to gut FEMA? What did they think was going to happen?
Hold up, that was one guy who threatened FEMA, and the majority of NC did not vote for Trump. It's despicable to imply we deserve this.
The majority of the voters voted that way, alas you're seiibg the result play out.
Stay sane !
No they didn't, he just got the most votes of any candidate. Some votes that weren't for Trump weren't for Harris either. The majority of NC voters did not vote for him. On top of that, look at the demographics of the hardest hit areas. Much of it is left leaning.
We're going to see the results play out regardless, but it's pretty low to act like we deserve it.

dunno, when people are repeatedly told they are voting against their interests, but they still vote against their interests, then it is quite difficult to add to the baseline anger about them voting against their interest when their interest does not interest the party they voted for.
You do realize there are many North Carolinians who didn't vote for him, suffered badly from the storm, and are still becoming the target of other peoples' smugness or rage?
Regardless, picking and choosing which people you help or care about based on politics is shitty and makes you no better than the current administration.
Regardless, picking and choosing which people you help or care about based on politics is shitty and makes you no better than the current administration.
Bro, did you check where the bar went? Not storming the capitol is sufficient to be objectively better than the current admin.
Fair point. Guess we can all stop caring for each other.
You’re comparing – what you perceive as – schadenfreude to fascism. It’s just adding to this notion that for some reason, we hold MAGA voters to a different standard. No amount of “jeering” will ever be comparable with a vote for trump so if anybody’s angry at anybody, it should be those who enabled this.
Schadenfreude or fascism, which are you?
And for the rest of us that live here? We just have to suck it up and be like, well, everybody gets to be an asshole to us because we couldn't control our neighbors' votes
Schadenfreude or fascism, which are you?
Reading comprehension's hard, eh?
And for the rest of us that live here?
Sorry bro, I can't control your shitty neighbors' votes either.
Explain, what am I missing? You want to talk down to anyone from NC because the voter suppression, voter intimidation, and everything else that handed a tyrant and traitor the win for the state means we deserve to suffer?
Look at our state elections. We've got a great governor (former state AG who was outstanding.) How did he win? Look at our new AG. Jeff Jackson is my favorite politician. Never seen one as transparent. I have doubts over the legitimacy of the vote, but I'm not gonna sit here and cry cheater because the other side has done that for so long it's lost all meaning.
And yes, I assert that your attitude towards us makes you no better than them. It's real low to insist we deserve this.
You’re comparing – what you perceive as – schadenfreude to fascism.
I stated that you perceive this as schadenfreude. I feel joyless anger about the incredible stupidity, and significant annoyance by the self-defeating double standard that equates my anger with fascists actually voting for this.
Also, seriously, your measure of greatness is NC not electing the Black nazi for governor?! I mean this fucking bar is really fucking low.
This whole "not as bad as that" comparison is tired. You're being really shitty. You're inhumane. I'm done with you.
Edit: we also feel anger about all this, but have to get shit from everyone because the election couldn't be swayed. I hope you never have to go through a natural disaster like that and then get treated this way. Stay ignorant!
if it were up to me, you wouldn't be in this situation. i'm sorry if you can't see the difference.
Seems like he got the majority though.
Yeah over 50% of turnout. Maybe OP was trying to claim non-voters?
At any rate, they deserve the same federal help anyone who’s getting fucked by climate change, even if:
North Carolina remains the only battleground state that Trump won all three times.
NC voted for...checks notes...trump
Yes, but I didn't...
Yeah, that’s not happening. Those people might not even be employed anymore.
Your gonna have to keep waiting. Trump don't give a fuck.
he will throw a couple roll of towel paper to soak up some of the water from the flooding, and hand out trump water bottles.
