Sign-ups are spiking again (somewhere on the Big Web enshittification is happening), so re-pinning this.

You are welcome to start a new post in this community to say "hello there" and/or ask any questions you may have. There are also links to other helpful communities in the sidebar.

Ahoy-hoy. I'm quite partial to Nairn's gluten free chocolate chip biscuits myself. I'm not intolerant of much, including gluten, they just taste nice and make good dunkers.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Welcome, it's a niche biscuit but sounds a solid pick.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I brought some marmite crumpets. They're a bit stale, since they've been in the fridge for a few days, but if you microwave them they should be okay. I brought enough to make a handful of people mildly happy, whilst distressing everyone else

I brought some marmite crumpets.

You should really have mentioned that in your application.

And risked it all? Never

I'm new here in the Lemmy place, so just finding my feet. Trying to de-billionaire my life.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Welcome to feddit.uk. If you have any questions then fire away.

Repinning this as we've had a lot of new sign-ups because Reddit shat the bed again.

If you are new feel free to start a new thread in this community and say "hello", especially if you have questions as it'll be easier for everyone else to spot and chip in their twopenneth.

Hi all, I'm new to feddit from Reddit as they are talking about putting up more paywalls for certain content/subs, so I am looking at other alternatives; I'm on iOS.

Is there a feddit that you can ask questions about Feddit, like r/NewToReddit

Is there a Feditt to ask if there are existing feddits, like r/findareddit?

Is there a Feddit to discuss Feddit Apps?

Can I edit/change my username?

Sorry for all the edits & questions, I'm like a kid in a sweatshop, this Voyager App is the closest U.I. to Apollo for Reddit & it feels like I'm using Apollo.

I've brought some Hobnobs with Chocolate on…

I’m like a kid in a sweatshop

Genius.

Is there a feddit that you can ask questions about Feddit, like r/NewToReddit

As you are new you are welcome to ask here (you can start a new thread which would help get more focused advice) but, as well as flamingos' suggestions, ~~I suppose [email protected] or [email protected]~~ would work - they are general communities where folks can ask questions.

I think flamingos has covered the rest.

I’ve brought some Hobnobs with Chocolate on…

You'll fit in just fine.

edit: scratch that, just go with flamingos' suggestions which are now in the community sidebar.

Don't ask support questions in [email protected], per rule 5:

This is not a support community.
It is not a place for ‘how do I?’, type questions. If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email [email protected]. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Thanks, I'll scratch that.

I've updated the community sidebar with some of your helpful links. If you can think of others let me know.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Welcome friend! Happy to have you here.

Just a note on terminology, but subreddits are called communities here (hence the c/ in the url), not feddits. Also, the software this place runs is called Lemmy, so most places discussing it will have Lemmy in the name not Feddit. For questions about here there's [email protected] or [email protected], but feel free to ask questions here or on [email protected] and people will normally be happy to help (including myself).

Is there a Feditt to ask if there are existing feddits, like r/findareddit?

[email protected] or you could ask in [email protected] which is more active.

Is there a Feddit to discuss Feddit Apps?

[email protected]. To find apps https://join-lemmy.org/apps has a list of apps with filters for platforms. I'm not an IOS user, but I've heard good things about Mlem.

Can I edit/change my username?

You can't change your username, but you have a setting called 'Display name' which can be changed and will be what shows up in most places, e.g. my username is flamingos but my display name is flamingos-cant which is the name you see.

Sorry for all the edits & questions, I’m like a kid in a sweatshop, this Voyager App is the closest U.I. to Apollo for Reddit & it feels like I’m using Apollo.

I don't user Voyager myself, but I've heard it very good. Certainly can't go wrong with it.

The biscuit debate is fraught with danger.

Let me throw in another one though, Penguins or Tim-Tams? This will get the sparks flying, especially if there are any secret Australians hanging about in the forum.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

Stealth Australians?!?! Thanks for the shibboleth.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

Do tim tams even have jokes?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

This is unfair. It’s like those deals for new customers only, while the rest of us have to slum it with rich teas.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Rich tea are a better biscuit than hobnobs. I'll die on that hill.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Embarrassingly bad dunking with hobnobs. Rich tea will last 5 times as long in the dunk. They're better with butter as well and you get more per packet. And healthier, if that's your thing.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Lordy. Plain digestives for dunking as Ma'am (God rest her soul) intended.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You shouldn’t need to dunk a biscuit to make it edible. Just buy a better biscuit to begin with.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Nor should you need sugar syrup to flavour your pale oat cake, your insipid squashed flapjack. Rich Tea makes tea better and tea makes rich tea better. It is and always will be the king.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Actually the only thing that I agree with the Americans about is the only thing that improves tea is salt water.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago

Blimey, I wasn't expecting all this drama in a welcome to the welcome community. My fault for mentioning biscuits.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 weeks ago

Feddit.uk customer satisfaction is run by a major telco provider.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Newcomers? Sorry I have been asleep for a few days.

Also… dark chocolate digestives please!

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Newcomers? Sorry I have been asleep for a few days.

We saw a noticeable uptick in sign-ups around Trump's inauguration (which was unexpected as we aren't exactly US focused) and, while it has settled down, we are getting more than we were getting before. So I've been talking to the other Admins about improving on-boarding and a welcome community seems a good idea. Only the other day we had someone post an introduction in a new community and have to be redirected, which wouldn't happen as much if we had a dedicated welcoming community and now we have.

Also… dark chocolate digestives please!

Of course, we're not animals.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

No no no, you have forgotten the mythical dark chocolate hobnobs.

I can't believe there is even a debate on the matter! 😆

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 weeks ago

I mentioned Hobnobs - but only if everyone is well-behaved, choccy digestives are standard.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Ahhh nice! Thanks for the details. Good idea, Welcome to newcomers!

I’ll get out the posh m&s chocolate rounds then!

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

What about the decent china?

Or is it the Sports Direct mug and Balfour Beatty cups?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Oh we are getting out the best China, the lace dollies and the cake stand (even if only for Jaffa Cakes). We're trying to make a good first impression.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What do you mean only Jaffa Cakes? I'm seeing a whole new side to people that I'm not entirely comfortable with.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

I wasn't going to spoil them by getting the cream fingers, Battenburg and custard tarts out on their first visit. You earn them.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm hearing that in the voice of a sweet liverpudlian lady I used to work with.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Well I am in Liverpool, so you did well to spot the accent.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 weeks ago

Holy crap! That is too cool :)

Ngl, I love that accent because of her. Sweetest lady you could hope to work with.
