Yeah... tbh it's the main thing I miss on Reddit. The userbase of Lemmy seems to be older and unrelatable to me. Also tbh the meme subs were wayyyyy more dank on Reddit.

Can confirm. Am millennial and I only use emojis ironically. And to acknowledge messages I don't want to actually respond to on Teams.
Woah now hold on there just a second buddy ol' pal, we millennials are all about emojis! We called them smileys and emoticons sure, for forums and MSN Messenger etc, but we were all over 'em!
Then text messaging and Facebook came along and didn't support that stuff and we were sad, but now they're back!
Except standard emojis suck, they're better on stuff like Discord now where you can just upload whatever emotes you want and use them wherever, and they can animate too! Really feels like being back in the forum/MSN Messenger Plus! days 😁
The odd emoji at the end of a message is fine. It's embedding them throughout the text that makes it borderline unreadable.

I still don’t and probably never will understand why people use the same emoji more than once in a row.
Every other word is tacky and hard to read but I get it’s like… just a thing for people who grew up with emojis instead of little text emoticons. Or like older people trying to be a fellow kid kind of thing.
But the same one 5 times in a row? That’s just nonsense.

Don’t get too hung up on emojis, they’re just a new form of text! Most people I know use them ironically or to respond to coworkers that you don’t want to type text to.
As far as I remember, text filled with emojis was used by FB-era people to do like MLM (mid-level-marketing; pyramid schemes) ads. First time I saw it used not ironically.
Their text style was ripe for mocking since it was tacky af.
