osmand uses openstreetmap, its just a polished up android version. Most features I've seen in an open source maps app although I think they were trying to monetize some parts last I heard. openstreetmap on its own is unfortunately a pretty rough substitute for google maps in a lot of common areas (its pretty bad for even looking up addresses), but it is still useful

I'd argue the trend I see in the west in tech right now is that overuse of LLMs is actually resulting in a dumber, less educated tech workforce. that may not be the case elsewhere but it is in my experience. more productive? for some people yes, but not more innovative, or more educated.

I'm a bit more agnostic on AGI but yeah, that is what I mean by longtermism... I just don't think what we do in the present should be dominated by the possibility of developing AGI in 50 years

BUT, not because the user in question wasn't being transphobic or was just discussing the law , as you've asserted further down the chain here. they literally insisted that woman = cis woman and "transwoman" is something different, with no reference to the law. this is literally just a slightly more roundabout way of saying trans women arent real women, an obviously transphobic statement. Combined with the context of defending a ruling and a position by your PM in favor of banning trans women from womens spaces and other discriminatory measures, and the on the ground hate crimes it will inspire, thats actually a despicable position to take and defedding over that is not extreme for a vast-majority-queer instance.

And we aren't shutting off from 'the entire country', just one instance with moderation issues. just as I wouldnt be caught dead on lemmy.muri.ca, plenty of uk users aren't restricting themselves to the instance with a fuckin union jack on it, and those are the ones I'm interested in talking to anyhow

It's not isolationism to have standards, and we're actually significantly larger and more active than .uk on our own lol. The only varying opinion I've ever seen from your instance is liberalism or worse, which can't be said for many of our other federated instances, who occasionally serve up different views that aren't just what I can see on tv news.

kinda veering into effective altruist/longtermist territory here. the rise of macine learning and LLM usage aren't a concrete step towards AGI. LLMs dont understand literally anything, they just generate statistically right-sounding babble. for well-trod topics, that can generate correct responses, but not because there's any intelligence going on

But of course I generally agree, in the capitalist world this technology will be used and developed only insofar as it is profitable or can be used for class warfare against us. The trajectory is similar in china but they are actually funding the more valuable to humanity types of research, and will likely curb most excesses that would harm working people rather than lean into them.

I do see some of this. Its hard to get outside my social bubble enough to get a read on society at large but I definitely see some fraction of younger people being relatively offline and focusing on doing physical things in the real world. I just think that can be kind of a lonely path when many of the structures of society are being remade to push us towards whats online and whats profitable. For every chill offline person I meet I know two people addicted to gambling apps.
