MODERATORS

Due to overwhelming support for unilateral defederation from feddit.uk, we will be doing so tomorrow at 8:30pm Moscow time. Please see the previous thread for context.

We wanted to give everyone a heads-up since after we defederate, numerous account actions and deletions will NOT update on the defederated instance due to coding limitations in lemmy. This includes:

-Post edits and deletions

-Account edits (bio, profile picture, display name)

-Account deletions

In the future this will likely be fixed, but due to the dev work required it's not feasible to change in the short term. If you have any account or post changes you want to make, please do so before 4/27 8:30pm Moscow Time, or when this post is 24hrs old.

Thanks to everyone who provided their feedback. We will continue to fight transphobia and reactionary rhetoric on this instance for the safety of our users red-fist

Seen some vile transphobia in that instance, just from a short look. Horrible fucking place.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 hours ago

As someone (unfortunately) from Biscuit Island, I approve.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 hours ago (4 children)

Seeya folks! Kinda liked having you guys around, it's nice to see varying opinions it keeps me more open minded. Although obviously you'd disagree with that statement

[–] [email protected] 8 points 50 minutes ago (1 children)

transphobia isn't an opinion it's a "please face the wall"

[–] [email protected] 1 points 19 minutes ago

I was referring to the hexbear opinions not the transphobia

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 hour ago

Unfortunately when the varying opinion is whether or not our trans users should be harassed, there's no room for open mindedness. We just can't take the risk with instances who's admins are lax on protections we enjoy here. If you find things that are posted here interesting, I'd suggest making an account.

Many people have recently.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 hours ago

Varying opinions doesn't extend to hate speech

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Although obviously you'd disagree with that statement

Don't disagree.

We don't mind opposing information insofar as it isn't spammy gotchas or reactionary attacks on marginalized groups.

Removing "vuvuzela no iphone" and "communism bad tianmen winny the pooh" comments prevents this place from being the same annoying fight fest that every other liberal social media platform is.

Good faith discussion isn't a bad thing, but removing tired low-effort garbage is necessary to have a space where we can focus on our own discussions without derailing into having the same debates over and over. Most of those types of comments aren't good faith anyway and those users just want to stick it to us rather than explore ideas.

Hopefully someday we can reunite with you if feddit.uk changes or you make an account on another lemmy server.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 hours ago (3 children)

I wasn't referring to that sort of stuff, I meant with this defederation. A bit extreme in my opinion.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 42 minutes ago

Defederation is the choice that prevents the mod team from having to do a lot more moderating.

Sure, it is the most "extreme" option out of what a federated server can do, but anyone who really wants to participate in conversations with Hexbear can join any other Lemmy server that federates with us. Anyone who really wants to see or interact with our content will be able to.

So really it is us deciding the reach of federating with that server is worth less that the expected moderation effort. Not very extreme IMO.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

You think it’s extreme to protect trans people here from those who completely dehumanize us?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago (4 children)

Sure when you phrase it like that it sounds black and white, but i don't think the comment in question was "completely dehumanising". They were saying that, in law, "woman" refers to cis women. Which is what our supreme court decided recently. Horrible decision, and I disagree with it, but it's something to fight against. Not completely shut off from the entire country and hide in your bubble. Because if you do that your bubble will get smaller and smaller.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 23 minutes ago* (last edited 22 minutes ago)

Because if you do that your bubble will get smaller and smaller.

For some of us, this bubble is the only place their identity isn't under constant attack.

Bigots and liberal ideas exist everywhere. We won't miss anything by excluding them.

Creating a total commie bubble within a liberal society would take so much fucking effort that suggesting that blocking safe havens for bigotry prevents us from seeing important ideas is actually hilarious.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (2 children)

Feddit has no obligation to submit to a supreme court ruling. The Feddit admins simply have no intention of preventing transphobia on their instance. Either they agree with it, or they're too weak to stop it.

On Hexbear we have a fantastic melange of people who would be banned on sight in other instances purely because of their country of origin. I value that global scale bubble.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 35 minutes ago

Sounds like the supreme court ruling is just the thin veil needed to justify doing what they wanted to do anyway.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 39 minutes ago

Fair enough

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 hour ago

Going to fight the injust rulings of one country's supreme court by conceding to their points on my international website for no reason other than it's easier to side with bigots than it is to fight them

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 hour ago

He literally called trans women "it".

transphobia

I can call it a woman who used to have a penis or a woman who used to be a man if you want me to be pedantic about it.

There’s absolutely no excuse for letting such a fucked-up comment stay up. It’s such an obvious instaban.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Hexbear.net defederates with feddit .^y^ uk

Is this extreamism?

is-this

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

Saying something is extreme doesn't mean it's extremism. Is it extremism when I play Metal Gear Solid on the hardest difficulty?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 49 minutes ago (1 children)

I think it’s extreme that you don’t mind transphobia.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 38 minutes ago (2 children)
[–] [email protected] 2 points 23 minutes ago

If you did you'd make your feelings clearer in your original comment and delete your feddit.ukkk account.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 37 minutes ago (1 children)

You completely downplayed it in your other reply.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 26 minutes ago (1 children)

Ok I'll clarify. Guy is probably a bigot, he can fuck off for all I care. If he got punched in the face I'd be cheering. I don't want him on my instance. But we can't ban people for stating the law

[–] [email protected] 2 points 14 minutes ago

I call you out for completely downplaying a comment refering to us as "it", and you do it again by saying that he’s "probably" a bigot. Are you serious?

And for the last part: If they approve of this law, we sure as fuck can ban them. Why not?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

Hexbear.net defederates with feddit .^y^ uk

Is this extreme?

is-this

Happy now?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 48 minutes ago

extremely cool and good

[–] [email protected] 1 points 53 minutes ago (1 children)

Maybe clarify that it's over a single comment by a single user in the top text? Then I'd be happy yep.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 39 minutes ago* (last edited 30 minutes ago)

It’s not about a single comment or a single user (especially since there were multiple), but about the behaviour of the entire admin team, who after 3 days are still debating whether or not to do anything about it.

It’s so fucking selfish of you to expect trans people to put up with transphobes coming in here and treating us like shit, when all you have to do is just make another account here.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 hours ago

kneecap go on hexbear trouble ukkk

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 hours ago

Good. No more of that instance and their “ccp” whining.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 49 minutes ago

Thatchers still dead.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I asked to defederate as well in my small instance, but I think our admin is sleeping or partying because he had not answered yet. Waiting until Monday for him to answer before I'm going to make a fuss on the irc channel.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 16 hours ago
[–] [email protected] 35 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

before we defederate, can someone please tell them to suck me?

[–] [email protected] 20 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Hexbears should note there is a Fediverse memes comm on their instance:

[email protected]

[–] [email protected] 18 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

what does this have to do with them sucking me

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 hours ago

Well you have to tell them somewhere, right?
