For some reason I read this headline as "NPR chief" and it was legitimately shocking to me that NPR would be run by someone so actively sadistic.
It being the leader of the NRA is much less shocking.
I thought it said NSA, which also could be plausible

Who could have imagined the guy who defends the continued murder of schoolchildren being a sadistic psychopath? It's always the ones you most suspect.
Who the fuck can even stomach that? This psychopath makes a better living than most.
The trick is not seeing another living creature as having meaningful emotions or pain. Like you said, you need to be a psychopath.
Cruelty to animals is one of the few instances where I'm personally okay with unreasonably harsh punishments. Specifically cases like this. There's just no reason for it, no benefits, nothing was gained. It's just cruelty for the sake of cruelty, and anyone who's capable of doing that can, as far as I'm concerned, rot in prison or burn in hell. Alternately just treat them exactly like they treated the animals.
