I just stopped playing wow to go to bed and it's past midnight, I hate how relevant that picture is 20years into wow

Like some college campus in the US, probably. Or Portland.

From my point of view, this place seems very niche, techy, and "inside joke"-ish... So ima say a Cyber/tech coffee shop with a buncha (kind/seemingly friendly) Nerds all huddled up at tables together. Theres a separate cafe room just for- whatever the fuck Linux users do. And 75% of the men there are femboys in thigh highs. Everyone speaks in a way that, unless your a regular customer of the cafe it's gonna be complete fucking gibberish.

Ever walk into your college campus center at 11:45pm on a Saturday and discover the 25 unwashed dudes that are in there playing Smash Bros in a massive LAN party while drinking a mix of Mt. Dew and beer?

It would look like that.

But they are all disagreeing, scoffing at each other with "akshully" statements about things they don't understand.

It would look like a warehouse full of shelves that are very well organized but there's no map, and a lot of the shelves have the exact same designation but completely different contents.

Picture if you will a conputer genius, an expert in his field able to write like Shakespeare in basic. This person lives in 1985 and so what would be less than a raspberry pi today is now a large room filled to bursting. Lemmy is that room

Kensington Market in Toronto.

Multiple small mom & pop stores in a slightly grungy setting.

A small, abandoned office building.

The ground floor would be full of TVs playing news networks and people arguing about politics.

The top floor would be cubicles for the coomers

The basement would be full of servers and bearded people with Thinkpads running Linux

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

The tankies would be in the garden trying to start a commune

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

So basically exactly the same as my basement

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

A library full of cool people not stiffs lol

It is one of this places that were built by anarchists without any license and look, smell and feel quite funky. The audience though is really nerdy. So the closest that comes to mind is a Hacker space in a large European city.

Sounds like we might meet at the congress in december. :)

Some random building used for parties that one person pays for regularly so everyone else can stand in social circles and talk about random topics because they have nothing better to do.

More like a building where several strangers each pay for a flat, and people are free to come and go to different flats as they please.

I also think there would be a couple of distinct groups sticking to their own flats, and none of the others in the building wanting to visit them. These flats are known as "Defederated". Now and then a newcomer will stumble through the door, have a look around, and decide to never open that particular door again.

Note that I'm not mentioning any particular instances, so if you feel offended by this, that's probably on you.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

Also a few of the flats have donation boxes, and hopefully over time that'll be enough to keep the party going :)

I was also thinking flats/apartments where people go to hang out as a good metaphor. Not necessarily fancy ones either, the kind of cheaper, basic ones most people start with early in their adult life.

Apartments as fancy as its denizens are willing to make it, really.
