Sleep with the fish boners

Em, ... I mean fish sticks ... fish bones, yes, fish bones, that's the one!

"Gone fishing"

I feel like "Not an ichthyologist" is a bit confusing way for an ichthyologist to sign their email

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I... Don't get this one. What am I missing?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

I think the lack of the trailing comma is the clue here. The first three are email signatures. The last one is just saying "I'm not an ichthyologist".

you have to keep them on their toes

That's how the Spanish Ichquisition gets you.

Depending on the level of professionalism

Or

Unfortunately my ichthyology days are seemingly forever behind me (Maine biology with freshwater fisheries and marine economy specialties). Nowadays I sit in a lab and write reports for sales people.

Thanks for the advice davidgro!

Why is there such an overlap between marine biology and love of puns? Has anyone done a study yet?

[–] [email protected] 41 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I think there's an overlap in general between scientists and puns, I've seen posts like this from all fields

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

as an autistic person, i imagine that might have something to do with it 😂 i feel like a lot of scientists and researchers are on the spectrum at least a little bit.

When I saw studying marine bio I was told classes would thin out when "the people who just want to swim with dolphins wash out." Maybe there's a similar filter people ~~with no joy in life~~ who don't like puns.

Quick, survey the people who like swimming with dolphins and see if they disproportionately hate puns!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

Fun fact: dolphins hate puns almost as much as they hate Alan Alda.
