If I'm not mistaken, this doesn't seem like a process for the majority of deafness cases (inner ear cells damage), since it only helps the never impulses traveling from the brain to the inner ear, but does not restore the inner ear cells.

It's still good, I just clicked thinking that this procedure could help my hearing problems in the future :/

so, can they do upgrades yet? Like, super strength or crazy bad breath?

who does the gene therapie work?

Do they inject mrna (like with the covid vaccine) or is there more going on?

the article is a little light on the technical details.

The article said it was a harness virus that delivers it

So, not the mRNA vaccines, like the J&J vaccine.

If it's the one from the CHORD study, it's this one.

"DB-OTO, which is a cell-selective, adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy product candidate"

Basically, they give them an injection in the cochlea of a modified virus that doesn't cause disease and only infects specific cells, which then invades those cells, delivering a payload of the gene they want to insert. The new DNA gets put in the nucleus so the cell can manufacture the new protein to allow hearing.

This only works with people who have that mutation as the cause for their deafness.
