Were you allowed to rock the Casbah?

[–] [email protected] 23 points 4 months ago (1 children)

So this dude knows why Constantinople got the works?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Even though it's been a long time gone?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago

Yes, but he won't tell you because it's none of your business.

We had a boring enough mascot, but my highschool had separate black and white homecoming kings & queens... In 1998.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Pretty sure that was illegal at the time...

They're usually done as private parties with invites required and off campus. That way you can't sue the school.

This looks like fighting Turks. Fucking Turks would be different

...I think?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago

Oh my god, I was born in Pekin, though I never spent any time there. That's fucking nuts

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Huh. lemmy.ml also censors links, it seems. This is what I see:

https://ccamuseum.org/1981-the-pekin-removed-high-school-team-becomes-the-pekin-dragons/

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Rhymes with links, like how you might shorten "chicken links" into a one-syllable word. Put that where "removed " is and you're golden.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Didn't know it censored, but the censored item is a racial slur so that makes sense. Prolly have to search pekin high school becomes pekin dragons

I know. If I want to see it I can simply click on the fediverse button on the comment to see what the instance that sent it sees.

Rival high school: the Greeks

[–] [email protected] 26 points 4 months ago (1 children)

as a Turk, this is fucking awesome

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

We were the Trojans, which is basically just Turks as well.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

But "Trojans" can be very easily turned into a nasty joke. Funny, but nasty.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

True. Unfortunately, we had a higher than average level of teen pregnancy, so we apparently didn't learn anything from our namesake. It's also sad that I doubt many in my high school know that Troy is in Turkey, most probably think it's in Greece.

But at least the mascot looked cool (like this, but more ghetto). It unfortunately looked more Roman/Greek than Turkish though, whereas Hittite would be a lot more appropriate (and way more unique imo). But we weren't known for our academics, we were known for sports...

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Mine was the eagles. Pretty boring!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Eagles rock.

We were the Trojans, which is a fancy way of saying Turks from a specific region.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

You keep saying that, but it is very much not true.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

But it is. Troy is in Turkey, and ancient Trojans were Hittites, an Anatolian people. They were gone as a culture by the time the Turks arrived, but the region has more recent history as Turkish and Anatolian than anything else, so I don't think any other culture can really claim it other than Turkey. The famous "Trojan War" likely never happened, so the affiliation of Greek military with Troy makes no sense.

So yes, I think Trojan should mean "Turk" because it's currently in Turkey and no other culture has a reasonable claim to it. They may not have been Turks at the time, but Turks claim it now.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

"No other culture can claim it" well Turkey sure as shit can't claim it as they wouldn't come anywhere near Anatolia until about two thousand years after Troy was destroyed and forgotten. Trojan culture simply doesn't exist anymore, whatever it was.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Maybe Trojan culture is the friends the Turks made along the way. :)

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Pan Turinism

[–] [email protected] 30 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I don't think many actual Turkish people would be offended by this.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Looks like Nasretin Hoca meets Sinbad. Then again, I see literally a "black beard" which is a slur I'm not going to translate here.

Are they young? Do they dress in suits and chase Cloud Strife?
