Highway Six stops both ways!
I spent 2 hours going the 80 miles between Austin and San Antonio, average 40mph. For comparison, in the UK I can go between London and York, which is 200 miles - also in 2 hours, average 100mph.
One of them has a good rail system.
And I'm not even talking about high speed rail.

Has been a thing since before WW2 by the looks of it.

A lot of those are toll roads so you get to pay to sit in traffic.
In Houston I often find the service streets are faster than the beltway.
I use Waze to navigate and usually follow its direction. It's pretty aggressive about finding the best route and will take you on an adventure occasionally.
Is Waze functional again? I used it first several years until it started changing my destination without warning mid-route
I haven't noticed anything but the occasional glitch (a reboot would fix) and nothing of what you mentioned. I use it practically every time I drive. Changing destinations would not be acceptable though.
