Meanwhile On Grad

Documenting hate speech, conspiracy theories, apologia/revisionism, and general tankie behaviour across the fediverse. Memes are welcome!

What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

Honestly there is a reason Lemmy doesn't have great mod tools

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago

I feel like throwing a fit about the political alignment of a platform fundamentally built on democratic principles is always a self-own. "It's not fair that people don't upvote my unpopular opinions!"

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There are sadly leftists who have embraced censorship as a virtue.

But I am one socialist who never will.

It can be a valid tactic in limited circumstances.

Exhibit A: Germany and Defensive Democracy, banning nazi parties and the "communist" party (not very communist btw, just a USSR proxy), also criminalizing overt hate speech.

But it can also be abused like some western democracies have started to ban anti-israel protests under the guise of "It's 'Antisemiticism'".

A double-edged sword.

Nothing sickens me quite like Israel's on-going genocide and America's carrying water for it

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Where are they finding this love for Israel? Like, I haven't seen anything but hate for Israel, zionism, and the Palestinian genocide. The bots that try to counter this narrative get nowhere, or get removed... I don't even seen the conservative c/ praising Israel.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

Thought the same. Usually its people calling for the destruction of Israel and wanting to commit ethnic cleansing in Israel, but I couldn't remember seeing someone massively support Israel.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So bizarre that they start off with whining about Trump and Musk being criticised. One should have thought that that would be something a true communist could agree with.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago

They love both Trump and Musk

Lemmy world is defederated from hexbear, so this user has gone out of their way to use an alt to view posts from there. That's their problem.

The whole Israel tangent is bullshit anyway, I always see posts and comments critical of Israel for genocide across pretty much every instance.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 days ago

The liberal strawman they have constructed defends Israel. And remember, much like the right, "liberal" is the most scathing insult they have. They genuinely can't fathom anyone being leftist and not a tankie.

I mean, they mostly just made things up.

Absolutely unhinged and measurably false. Sure the second highest upvoted post over the last 12 hours is about genocide in Gaza.

I guess my Tianenmen onion ruffled some jimmies lol.

I really find it hard to understand how people get into this twisted mindset.

Edit: just reading the thread. Yikes.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago

I believe you're referring to the impromptu, unannounced, Tiananmen Square Tank Parade...

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think feathers are ruffled but jimmies are rustled?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago

I think you might be right!

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

looks who in denial, when they called tianamen square AI slop. its odd to me they are anti-israeli, yet support governments that would be supporting genocide.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago

The pictures literally date back to then. That's so much denial.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

When u build a free decentralised platform u get real freedom. Lemmy has always been the true embodiment of the marketplace of ideas. They are only now realising it.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's a stretch. There will always be overzealous mods who ban you for things you say on other instances. Personally I think they're doing me a favor.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

Freedom includes running away from people that day things you don't like. Then blocking or banning you from an instance you don't care about is them running away

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Oh, they're mad as hell their echo chamber has lost its echo.

Also, our parliament has rules for a reason, and deliberately disrupting proceedings is a big deal for a very good reason. You break the rules, you get suspended.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Eh there's a difference giving the usual ritual slap on the wrist for a ritual stunt, as is done when parliamentarians hold up signs, come in with t-shirts with political slogans, or whatever, and suspending parliamentarians for unprecedented amounts of time on top of that timed such that they will miss the budget vote.

As such, broken clocks being right twice a day the tankie got it right in this instance, OTOH, if you look at the actual thread the comments they mention got their deserved pushback and (depending on level of ignorance of the poster) downvotes.

Apparently previous NZ precedent includes no suspension for driving a truck into parliament? Some Kiwi send me a link I want to see that.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Someone drove a land rover part way up the steps, it wasn't anything dramatic. I remember a similar stunt with a tractor as well.

Also, they didn't miss the budget vote, their suspension wasn't passed until after the budget was passed. They didn't say anything in the debate, and couldn't have stopped the budget from passing anyway.

The NZ Maori party favour theatrics over results, and have been like that for a long time.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

Any opposition party "favours" theatrics. As in: They don't, they'd rather rule, but in lieu of enough votes theatrics is what they can use to get shit done.

It's when parties employ theatrics while in government that you should become suspicious.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago

yes, because they got defederated and cant"troll" on general lemmy instances, much like how conservatives in thier isolated echo chambers whine about the same thing.

[–] [email protected] 59 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"Any rebuttal is shut down by these drones." Proceeds to complain that their whataboutism isn't respected as a valid "rebuttal".

[–] [email protected] 50 points 2 days ago

I liked that bit, anytime I use whataboutism, I get called out for whataboutism
