Yep, this new pope is off to a great start.

I bet 110% media coverage will be in DC

If he wasn’t a sexist and a homophobe I’d actually like that guy. But Catholics have a long history of misrepresenting scripture to suit their political purposes, and centuries of bad habits are hard to break.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Name one Christian denomination that doesn't have a history of using scripture for political purposes.

I'm not saying misrepresenting because that's an obvious sola scriptura protestant lens, that obviously doesn't apply to non protestants.

There, FTFY

Organized religion is a racket. I’m not defending it, I’m pointing out that they don’t even know their own source material.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

As an atheist I don't really have skin in the game, but unorganized religion can also be a racket. At least with organized religion there can exist some degree of accountability, whereas with new age quacks there is nothing.

The scriptures themselves are misogynistic and homophobic. The religion is rotten.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Judeo-Christian scriptures are many things, including misogynistic (women are literally considered property), but they are not, and never have been, homophobic. Not defending them, just pointing out one of those fun facts that gets overlooked because people accept what they’re told - including in the form of compromised translations - without ever raising a finger to confirm if it’s accurate. They want to believe it, so they do.

So the proscription against gays sex in leviticus, the description of "shameful acts" in romans 26-28, or the condemnation in corinthians and timothy are what exactly?

You may want to believe, and want me to believe, that these do not exist or are always mistranslated, but I can't believe that without evidence.

I'm also not sure why you separate the original texts from the modern circulating translations.

The bible is a living collection which is added to and removed from over time. It is what Christians believe it to be. If most Christians are using faulty translations, that is the bible.

Leviticus: raping your male slaves is incestuous, and males have more rights than females. Raping your female slaves is okay, though, if you follow some extra rules.

Paul’s letters: Temple prostitution, pederasty.

Let’s put it another way. If we’re translating Marx and replace every instance of the word “bourgeoisie” with “jews” and “proletariat” with “aryans” is it still Marx? No, it’s corrupt nazi trash. The “original” texts are still there in black and white in their original languages.

Another fun fact: hell isn’t a scriptural concept. Neither the word nor concept appears anywhere. Also, for being anti-abortion, scripture is explicitly pro-abortion. We could point out the ways that modern Christian teaching directly conflicts their own holy texts all day. My point is that the things they preach are frequently contradicted by their own texts. When someone pulls out something in english and says “look right here, it says ‘homosexual’” I can pull up the original language and point out that no, it doesn’t say that.

women are literally considered property

And what do you think life was like when those scriptures were written?

There is worthwhile sexism in current Christianity to complain about without posturing that 1,500 year old text reflects life 1,500 years ago

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The Bible is explicitly anti-homosexual.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

But when it says to stone gay dudes to death, you have to read it in cOnTeXt! And there’s a handful of fringe theologians who think they were actually just talking about gay pedo rapists!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

And I mean who knows, maybe they want to get the gays high. You know, stoned. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

“The Bible” doesn’t exist. It’s a collection of disparate works by many different authors, from different cultures, over hundreds-to-thousands of years. Despite that, there is not a single “anti-homosexual” line anywhere in it. The word itself does not even exist in any of the original texts. Translations that include the word “homosexual” have deliberately mistranslated… and English translations in particular are especially guilty of this.

Again, I am not defending the many heinous things in those texts, I am pointing out how they have been abused, misused, and twisted by a corrupt political power for it’s own benefit.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Lol ok. Sure thing, the Bible doesn't exist.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The pope is catholic. The catholic bible is definately homophobic. It has multiple references to a man lying with a man, and man treating a man as a woman.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

It talks about incestuously raping your male slaves (but female slaves are fine if you follow some extra rules), about raping children, and about temple prostitution. None of those things concern homosexuality, particularly monogamous, consensual, not-of-the-same-household same-sex relationships.

The catholic church has twisted those things into something completely different than what they say. But we have those texts in their original languages and they are pretty darn clear. I’m amazed the church has gotten away with it for so long… but then they do have a policy of “what the church says is as good as scripture” so…

The mental gymnastics you people will go through to avoid facing reality... Sad.

Yes, you people. Ignorant Christian morons insisting that everyone lives according to a bronze age sex manual.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I’m an atheist. I’m not engaging in apologetics, I’m pointing out that Christians don’t know their own source material and their behavior and beliefs directly conflict with the texts they claim are the source of those beliefs.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh wow you got me! Good trap 🙄

[–] [email protected] 1 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

I wasn’t trying to lay any traps. I thought my position was clear. Still, I really cant fault you for your anger.

That said, I find coming out swinging rarely works in ones favor. Check out Alex O’Connor on YouTube. He has lots of great material on how to deal with religious folks.
