It is going to be even less now the US has cut down massively on visas. Foot - Aim- Pull Trigger.
World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

the US has cut down massively on visas
That's why I travel with MasterCard.
(This may actually be what Trump believes)
I'm so sick of this.
the Tariffs are only a secondary reason why foreigners and tourists are staying the fuck away. its the Internal nightmare, Geopolitical policy and commentary thats pissed people off
- its the whitewashing of genocide and blank cheque attitude toward Israel after it went way too far.
- its the whitewashing of genocide and devils advocacy of Russia as it is de-facto at war with America and its Allies now.
- its the constant comments of Invasion of Panama, Greenland, Mexico and Canada, and the utter disrespect / jingoism in it.
- its the constant demonizing of Americas military allies in the face of the most turbulent period since the cold war.
- its the inhuman treatment of its own people, and the administration basically saying "get mad, fuck you gonna do about it?"
- its the plainclothes gestapo prowling the streets of its own country looking for people who are deemed too mexican to be allowed.
- its the hostile treatment of tourists to begin with, laughably suggesting torists who come from europe, australia, etc, places that are fundementally better places to live. are actually coming to america to work illegally, and they end up in a cell for 3 weeks with no contact while the "investigation is pending"
and so much more.
Tariffs are an insult , but they're not the reason foreigners are avoiding the country,
its because America has become a bed of Pig Shit Fascists.
100%. I'm an Australian, married to an American. Moved her here to Australia in 2015 and now she says she'll never set foot in that country again, not even to visit her own family. Too much uncertainty that trump will throw a tantrum and she'll get stuck there somehow.
Should be mandatory reading before anyone tries to visit the U.S.
Until we fix this please do not come here.
A friend of mine should be landing in LA today. He's a cis white man though, and I think should be fine. Hopefully.
However, for anyone not cis male, white and speaks English, I wouldn't recommend at all. There seems to be a common denominator for anyone who doesn't fit that profile... I'm glad I visited least year before all this shit went down. I would've been detained for sure.
This weekend I went to a casino hotel and the place was busy like it was Wednesday and the pope died. Nobody there. It wasn't desolate but there was plenty of walkable space when its usually jam packed for any given weekend.
That's probably got more to do with people being broke as fuck
Vices actually sell better during times of hardship.

As an American, even the ones that aren't should stay away. Why visit a place where you might get kidnapped by government sanctioned brute squads and sent to a death camp in another country?
Or on the business end of a bullet from some jerkoff with a grudge and an arsenal of AR-15's?
Yes, I think a lot of Americans are not aware that there are official travel warnings against going to the United States and for good reasons.
alot of them are still in denial, or ignorant of the situation.
Yeah, the tariffs are way less important than this. I'm planning a trip and I'll be taking a longer, more expensive route just to not land in the US. For a connection (which you require a full visa for)
I'm going to be flying from Canada to Canada later this year and want to make sure the flight path stays inside our airspace.
Apart from the costs there is the risk of not getting in, not coming back, or ending in a south American prison.
Why are tourists so chicken?
EITHER south america or africa, and middle east. syria and rwanda was his next choices for deportation.
(Sane) Tourists in general are staying mostly away. Period. Not supporting Gilead - I mean …
UK increasingly going domestic is just because we've had some cracking weather.
This week is half term kids holiday and has been shocking so there'll be waves of people booking abroad as we speak
*From all countries.
US customs and the BS that goes along with it, once an unavoidable hub for Canadian travelers flying to Central and South America, will now, this year, have three airlines—Air Canada, Air Transat, and Avianca—all of which will significantly expand their routes to avoid any need to touch down in the United States by the end of the year.
Canada isn't backing down.
As an American, the worst customs experiences I've had were in the US
Now try it as a non-american.
I can only imagine how horrible it is. I'm sorry you've had to go through it and I wish there was something I could do to make my county apologize to you for the indignity
No, you can’t. And most Americans don’t seem to care about the harm caused by the leaders they elect to the rest of the world. In this case twice, no less. While you come and go freely in Europe, others deal with the consequences created by your administration. This is unfair. Keep your apologies to yourself. By the way, what brings you here? Shouldn’t you be in Reddit?
all of the U.S. is now a flyover state.
Canada used to be the largest source of international visitors to the United States by a large margin. I suspect that Canadians especially will take, on average, quite a bit of convincing to travel south of the border now.
they will travel south, just south of USA.
You couldn’t pay me to visit the US. I wanted to clarify when I would return, but at this point I can’t.
Depending on the region and how you measure the difference, the drop is anywhere from 25% to 75%, so yeah, it's a lot. For reference, in 2024 about 3.3 million Canadians went to Florida alone, and that doesn't count other states -- in particular border areas that heavily depend on Canadian shoppers. This nonsense started at the tail end of the winter travel season so the effects didn't have time to fully manifest but next year will be very bad for the US.
Wise. We don't deserve your tourist dollars these days.
Hmmm... i wonder why... 🤡
I wonder why they don’t mention all the incidents of people from other countries being put in detention/jail/gulag…
gosh why is the rest of the world so selfish
