On Monday I have a meeting with my boss and his boss. They wouldn't say what for, only that "I shouldn't worry". Which makes me ABSOLUTELY worry. Don't think I'll be fired but I'll probably be put on a PIP or something.

On top of that one of my cats is actively dying. She's 15 and I'm by no means ready to say goodbye.

Then I decided to upgrade my pc but of course I botched that and now I have a very expensive paperweight, a mountain of frustration, a few thousand € wasted and nothing but misery and shit to look forward to.

Ain't life grand? I'm in my 40's and when I was younger, I kept going thinking "one day surely things will finally be better". But they're not. They always keep getting worse and my ability to cope diminishes instead of growing. I feel every failure separately covering me with their weight, and I've finally racked up enough that the combined stress is starting to crush me completely.

I'm not in the same shit as you, but it's hard to tell one from another when it's up to your waist.

Keep on keeping on. It's all we can do.

It's most likely good news not bad news. Your boss could have easily fired you on Friday, but they're bringing their boss in to show you off and talk you up to them. Enjoy your weekend and don't stress about it.

Just had the "talk". It's a PIP, aka they're getting ready to fire me. Called it.

I'm sorry, that sucks. Still, it's better to enjoy the weekend and not stress about things outside of your control. What do you do for a living? Is it something that you can pick up another job somewhere else fairly easily doing the same thing or something more specialized? If they want you out I'd just start looking for a better opportunity elsewhere.

Thanks for your concern. It's a software company I've been doing support for for a full decade now. Five years ago the company was bought by a multinational, and ever since things have been steadily getting worse & worse. I have no doubt this PIP is just to have the paperwork to fire me for cause down the line. I'll try my utmost to fulfill its requirements but there's no real winning here. Lol, instead of "celebrating" my 10 year anniversary here I'm all but fired.

NEVER give a company a single speck more than the absolute minimum. I spent thousands of lunch hours just working instead of eating because the workload was so high. The only reward I ever got for that was more work.

It does sound like they're edging you out. I'd start applying elsewhere right away. There's a lot of remote opportunities for software support. They are extremely competitive, but you have more experience than I do and I'm in the same field. I just recently landed a job as a software specialist in the public sector and it's insane how different the environment is vs a for-profit company. By the end of my job search I was averaging 10 applications a day and hitting multiple interviews a week. It was a lot of work finding a new job, but it's worth it in the end.

I've never stayed at a job longer than 3 years so I don't know what it's like to give 10 years of effort to a company, but I agree with that sentiment. You should always look out for yourself first and the good news is you'll probably end up making more money than you ever could at your current job by going elsewhere.

Oh it's definitely not good news. I've been in hot water with management for over a year now, and they recently cut all bonuses and instigated a hiring freeze.

Most likely I'll get to do someone else's job on top of mine for no extra pay. And that's a best case scenario.

Got a whole weekend to fix the pc. Just focus on that. Pip is better than being fired just follow the program to the T and learn from it. Sorry for your cat

Just spent another afternoon but I can't get the thing to boot at all. I get every led error under the sun but nothing I do changes a goddamn thing.

I should've known though. This is the 3rd time in my life trying and failing to build my own pc. I fucking WORK in IT. I'm so useless and stupid it's a miracle I manage to get dressed in the morning. No wonder my colleagues all hate me. They're goddamn right to.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

This might be useless advice but I think this is a situation that can be helped by taking a walk. Get some fresh air, clear your mind, and come back with a fresh set of eyes. You have experience, so I know you can work this out with some patience.

Also fuck your colleagues, and for that matter fuck your job for making you feel that way. Your worth isn't measured by them. Fuck capitalism for making us dependent on such abusive relationships in order to work and make a living.

Get that computer fixed up so you can use it to look for greener pastures. Find a recruiter, that seems to be the way to do it these days.

If your system has Ddr5 just turn it on and leave it for like 10 minutes. The mobo will train the memory and it looks like it's not doing anything but then will boot normally and it only does it once after a huge change or bios reset type events.

Wow. Your life could be my life. I'm sorry you're dealing with all of that at once.

I have a ton of anxiety about my job right now - they are expecting the world of me and I don't have enough faith in myself to pull it off. Also, my little cat just died.

If you need to talk to someone, no strings attached, I gotchu.

Just go for it. You usually are way better than you think! And it sounds like the rest has even less of a clue. Just give it your best and document your work and decisions (+ motitavion why you choose what you choose !!!). That way you add to you're own confidence and are able to review an explain what happened and why.
