Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

4)its false, you cant control it because you become addicted to it, and become tolerant and you end up taking even more. i knew someone in college that was taking pills she got so used to it, she had to keep taking it for it work normally.

The dependency does not change based on the form.

When you take a pill, you have a hard number about how much caffeine did you just ingest. On the other hand, you don't get that at all with the normal coffee.

But then you are missing out on all the other rad methylxanthines

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 days ago

Well, I love coffee but at the moment I'd better avoid caffeine, thus I'm drinking a lot of decaffeinated. What I mean, coffee isn't just about caffeine.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Every possible way? How about the fact that I drink coffee for the taste and ritual - not for the caffeine.

Somebody hasn't seen Saved by the Bell

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

I'M SO EXCITED! uncontrollable sobbing

That shit was supposed to be speed (amphetamines), but it got censored 😭

Yeah its more efficient for sure, but coffee/tea/other caffeine producing plants have more alkaloids than just caffeine in them. Pure THC feels different than cannabis, plain nicotine is different than tobacco, etc. Yeah it will do the job, but elements of the experience are missing. Ever notice that the caffeine buzz from tea feels different than from coffee? Its not just the amount. Also, coffee and tea are tasty and come with a ritual that in my opinion is just as important as the drug itself. Pulling a shot of espresso and sipping on it does more for me in the morning than just chugging something caffeinated. And you can control the amount of caffeine you get to a certain degree. Most Arabica coffee contains close to 0.5%-1% caffeine by weight after roasting, so I know my shot of espresso made with 18g of beans is going to be a little under 130mg of caffeine on average accounting for less than perfect extraction.

Then there’s the potential real health benefits of drinking tea or coffee as well.

What's for dinner tonight honey?

McDonald's At-Home Nourishment Cube 2.0! Now available in green flavor!

Oh boy, I was getting tired of red flavor!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

Caffeine pills are probably a lot easier to accidentally overdose on. If you make coffee you can see the beans for yourself and have a rough idea of how much caffeine you could be getting (if imprecise). With pills you have to take the manufacturer's word for it. Maybe one of them decides to cut corners and put way less caffeine than they say, you think you've been taking X milligrams of caffeine and know how you react to it, but then try a different brand and get surprised with way more than you were expecting. Not to mention how it's easy to take a bunch of pills as opposed to the more time consuming and unpleasant process of brewing and drinking large volumes of coffee, which isn't something an unaware person can easily do by mistake.

I quit coffee and most caffeine. I still enjoy a decaf coffee, no milk, no sugar, about once a week.

I had a red bull about a month ago when I needed to drive about six hours in one day. It kept me alert.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Coffee is healthier and brush your teeth lol

[–] [email protected] -4 points 4 days ago (2 children)

How is Coffee healthier exactly?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

F L A V I N O I D S

See also, numerous studies. Coffee is actually chock full of good shit and 2 to 3 cups in the morning had been shown to protect health.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Quite a bit of fibre, polyphenols (antioxidants), almost zero calories.

By the same logic, Soylent is better than food...

Except you're forgetting that it's about the enjoyment of the whole experience, not just getting caffeine into your body as efficiently as possible. That would be an IV drip.

edit: I've just realised where I am. Well played, excellent content, 10/10, take your upvote

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I would agree with you if they made caffeine pills in a range of doses. Though admittedly it's been a while since I've looked into caffeine pills, I don't remember seeing anything that less than 200mg of caffeine per dose. Which is a fairly high dose. Most energy drinks contain a little more than half of that.

This also ignores the fact that for a lot of people the act of preparing and drinking their beverage of choice is part of their daily morning preparation. That morning ritual is part of good sleep hygiene as it helps you transition into being awake and alert for the day.

Plus there are other health benefits to drinking coffee or tea that you don't get from the caffeine alone.

Like what?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

For coffee: lower risk of heart disease, kidney disease, and type-2 diabetes. As well as lower risks for a handful of degenerative neurological disorders.

https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/9-reasons-why-the-right-amount-of-coffee-is-good-for-you

For tea: lower risks of some cancers, better regulation of blood sugar, and improved sleep quality.

Both also offer benefits to alertness and cognitive function, though that benefit seems to primarily stem from caffeine.

There’s also https://www.kaffn8.com/. Haven’t used it myself, but a guy I worked with sure did.

Not every way. Coffee is better:

Coffee tastes good.

Coffee is reasonably healthy, it's a food not a pill.

Coffee is nice to relax with friends, it's overall a pleasant experience.

On dose only, I agree. But why be efficient about eating and drinking? That doesn't seem like a reasonable goal. I want to be inefficient about that. Stop and relax.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

I will add in my own twist:

Caffeine pills are better than those shitty MiO caffeined water flavor squeeze bottles.

  1. MiO is stupid expensive and owned by an evil megacorp.
  2. Black plastic isn't recyclable.
  3. Dosages are standardized for caffeine pills. If you squeeze thr MiO too hard and don't notice, you're gonna have a bad time.
  4. You can wash it down with any flavor liquid you choose, not just chemical fruit flavor.
[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago

Bro dropping the pro tip. folks out here digesting food for energy when you can get energy out of the wall for free with a clothes hanger.

[–] [email protected] -5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Agreed and I did this for a bit until I got lazy.

And if you have taste and money you can just drink monster energy instead which addresses 1,2 and 4 and is just enjoyable and tasty and much less harmful than most coffee since it has no sugar, calories and the caffeine dose is always clearly stated in mg, which is hard to find for coffee tins.

[–] [email protected] 58 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Sure, if your goal is literally just to get a dose of caffeine. Some people actually like the taste and experience of drinking it in liquid form.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 days ago

Indeed unpopular, well done!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

True ...... Your opinion isn't gonna be popular any time soon ;) . It's not (just) about caffeine. The problem seems to me you never had a decent cup coffee in your life.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Drinking a Cup of hot water works better to relax me better than anything else.

Then a supper of salt and a waltz through your empty bed?

Have someone jet wash your skin makes more sense than having a shower

People downvoting seem to have forgotten this unpopular opinions.

I love the taste of coffee and it’s the only thing I drink other than water. It’s not just about caffeine intake and happily drink decaf along with 2 regular coffees.

Counterpoint: the ratio of downvotes to upvotes indicates that it is an unpopular opinion

  • 1 Not mine
  • 2, 3, 4 You really think drinking coffee is about caffeine? What's next, you should eat sugar instead of drinking soda?

It's not unpopular, it's being ignorant.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 4 days ago

Take my mocha away and there will be trouble. Lol

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Drinking Everclear makes more sense than having a beer.
