Rules:

1) Treat Others in a Civil Manner. This is not the place to deride others for their race, sexuality, or etc. Personal insults of other members are not welcome here. Neither are calls for violence.

2) No Contemporary Politics Historical politics that influenced designs or adoption of designs are excluded from this rule. Acknowledgement of existing laws to explain designs is also permissable, so long as comments aren't in made to advocate or oppose a policy. Let's not make this a place where we battle over which color ties our politicians should have, or the issues of today.

3) No Advertising This rule doesn't apply to posting historical advertisements or showing more contemporary ads as a means of displaying information on an appropriate topic. The aim of this rule is to combat spam/irrelevant advertising campaigns.

4) Keep Post on Topic This rule will be enforced with leeway. Just keep it related to arms or Forgotten Weapons or closely adjacent content. If you feel you have something that's worth posting here that isn't about either of those (and doesn't violate other rules) feel free to reach out to a mod.

5) No NSFW Content Please refrain from posting uncensored extreme gore or sexualized content. If censored these posts may be fine.

Post Guide Lines

These are suggestions not rules.

-Provide a duration for videos. eg. [12:34]

-Provide a year to either indicate when a specific design was produced, patented, or released. If you have an older design being used in a recent conflict provide the year the picture was taken. Dates should be included to help contextualize, not necessarily give exact periods.

-Post a full URL, on mobile devices it can be hard to tell what you're clicking on if you only see "(Link)".

-Posts do not have to be just firearms. Blades, bows, etc. are also welcome.

This less lethal launcher from UMX, a sub brand of the German company Umarex, has a built in range finder tied to a laser rangefinder that regulates an electronically controlled valve to ensure a projectile is launched pneumatically to hit a target at no greater than 30 joules of impact force.

This ensures that sufficient force is applied to receive the desired effect while mitigating the risk of causing unnecessary damage.

It is designed to fire a variety of capsules including one containing a pepper spray like powder and one that has an ultraviolet markings dye.

Can it launch grenades, but like gently?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

That's the 'baby flashbang' setting

So basically

[–] [email protected] 14 points 6 months ago (4 children)

how much is 30 joules? how bad does that hurt? guessing enough to drop someone?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago

Its about as much energy as a poorly executed punch from an average person but with a significantly smaller contact area.

Google says a baseball thrown at 80Mph has ~88 joules of kinetic energy.

Idk how that relates to impact force but hopefully someone smarter than me will help.

that gives me so little context lol

but as someone above said, its like a 3 kg weight dropped from 1m

freedom units thats a 7lb weight from around 3 feet

Approximately a gallon of milk dropped from waist height, but with the impact concentrated into an area 18 mm (~3/4 in) across.

So, it sounds like it could probably pierce skin or permanently destroy an eye for example ? Would it be enough to fracture a skull ?

Edit: thanks for downvoting with no explanation, feels like I'm back to the good old reddit! /s

Maybe I'm off but that sounds like a lot of force concentrated into a tiny area. For reference, I know that when I was doing airsoft, a 2mm, 0.2g pellet expelled at 2J could already do some serious damage if it hit the wrong part of the body.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

Probably not fracture the skull but like most moving objects you wouldn't want it heading towards your eye. Decidedly not something you'd want to get hit with, but definitely preferable to the other options.

Ah finally and actually useful conversion I can understand.

Its 0.3 hubble-barns of water dropped from 0.0008 sheppys, concentrated into a circle with a 2-can jimmy griffin index diameter.
I dont know how much clearer i can be

Doing some mental math, it should be about the same feeling as getting hit by 3kg from about 1 meter high.

1J=1N 1N=100g1m 30J=30N=3000g1m

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago

converts to freedom units

yea ok so it hurts

That's actually really cool! I like seeing developments being made in specifically not killing people.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

I'm less enthusiastic about the development of less lethal weapon.

It's great if it can be used to replace the use of more lethal weapons but in practice it tends to add up to other weapons.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago

A for the soft spots if the Earth server decides to nerf your weapons...

[–] [email protected] 16 points 6 months ago (2 children)

How long until someone realizes if they aim far and milliseconds before pulling the trigger aim closer they can get a far shot power at a close target.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago

if you can move fast enough to make such a difference, then you yourself are the bullet at that point

[–] [email protected] 10 points 6 months ago

It doesn't work that way and it has a limiter anyway.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 6 months ago

While there isn't as many unique less lethal designs (compared to lethal) it seems to me like there's a greater level of diversity in the way they function, which is always interesting.
