I'm not worried about the price. I'm worried about them trying to take away ownership of physical games. Also, you have to consider some people don't have Internet to download the game. It's inevitable someone buys a game that needs a download and then is disappointed when they can't actually play it yet because they didn't have Internet.
How many games require no download whatsoever today?
Are they trying to say that $450 is worse than $599? Is that the logic here?
599 almost 20 years ago (or about 950 in today dollars).
I wonder if Sony doesn’t get it at all or is this just black PR via an obviously affiliated news outlet. It’s like posting Mac news from WindowsCentral and PlayStation news from XboxEra. Not worth accounting for bias when it’s likely you’re reading an ad.
These complaints are FUCKING INSANE. When the Wii Dropped in 2007, adjust for inflation, that baby comes out to $400 today. Mario Galaxy, Wii’s launch title, was $50. Adjust for inflation, that comes to $77 today.
Also, the Switch 2 is basically the 2007 version of a Wii PLUS a Nintendo SP. The Switch 2, on the numbers, is perfectly in-line with Nintendo’s prices for the past TWO DECADES.
These prices are fucking consistent. Inflation has skyrocketed, and on the whole, wages have kept pace with inflation. So, these prices make sense.
And like, I hate capitalism. I hate enshitification. I hate corporate greed. But why tf are people acting like Nintendo isn’t a corporation whose fundamental purpose is to create profit for shareholders? People are literally blaming Capitalism on Nintendo, and it’s fucking annoying. I just want to play Kirby in PEACE.
Yes, we should have expected a price rise when we've had some of the worst inflation in modern history this decade, but there's also the declining yen. One dollar was worth 114 yen the week the Switch launched. It is currently worth around 145 yen. The British pound also increased from 140 yen to 184 yen, and the Euro from around 122 yen to around 160 yen. That's around a 30% increase for all three currencies, which for the UK at least is almost enough to offset inflation.
Obviously the yen could possibly quickly recover in the next few years, but I don't think inflation is the only thing you should consider if you're going to talk about how fair the price is in western markets.
Wages have kept up with inflation my ass. What’s the federal minimum wage in the US? $7.25?
Then complain to your fucking government instead of a video game company?
People keep laughing at Trump supporters complaining about egg prices, but they're doing the exact same thing complaining about video games.
And has been since 2009!
You buy a Nintendo console for Nintendo games. If you don't want the latest Nintendo games, you don't get the new console. You want them and can't afford it? Save up, sell off some old games or wait for a second hand unit. Fomo is your enemy.
I feel like a lot of social media discussion about this is overblown. Gaming is a luxury in the end.
I think the reddit/lemmysphere is really underestimating just how many Nintendo fans are casual gamers who don't see the PS5, Xbox, or Steam deck as viable competitors. They want to play Animal Crossing, Zelda, and Mario Kart.
That's the thing. I can hold off buying the Switch now, because there's nothing that's a must play being released this year. But when the next Zelda or two come out... Well. It's not like other franchises that might release as a console exclusive and make it to PC/whatever a year or two later. Nintendo games stay on Nintendo.
I mean... They release on PC eventually... *cough🏴☠️*
Well, yes, but then I'd have to buy a new PC. And I'm assuming it would have to be pretty good. Still an option if you've got the hardware, though.
I am not sure how true this is any more, since I read it probably 10 years ago, but I remember reading an article that showed that the majority of video game consumers tend to just buy 1 or 2 games for a system, period, and only play those games. Like COD and Madden fans tend to only play COD and Madden, respectively. I definitely have seen that to be true with Nintendo fans. Most people I know IRL that "play games," just have a Nintendo system (not even necessarily a Switch) with 2-3 games unless they have kids.
I bought the first switch so I could play Breath of the Wild. That and Mario Odyssey are really the only two games I've put a significant amount of time into on the platform.
It's funny because I am the same with Nintendo. Had a Switch. Only thing I ended up playing was BOTW, and then TOTK. So I just kept the games after I dumped them, sold the switch and continue playing both on PC through emulation.
With both Yuzu and Ryujinx gone, what would you recommend out of the forks?
I never stopped using Yuzu.
People keep thinking there's some kind of war when nintendo is its own thing. I'd would never buy or touch any of the alternatives since they don't matter for me a filthy casual. But I'm also not interested in the n2 for now, I'll consider it in 4 or 5 years.
My friend recently was asking if he should get the switch 2 or what other portable console would be better as an adult. I told him to get the steam deck and he was so baffled by what it was, then he almost got some other random thing he found at Walmart because he figured it was the same thing. I guess I spend more time on the internet that I didn't even realize people don't even know what steam is
Did you tell him to emulate Nintendo stuff ON Steamrdeck?
No he was mostly interested in call of duty haha
