I've read before that this varies around the world with culture. In some places (US, UK) typical players presented with a create a character screen default to trying to make themselves. In other places (Japan) this isn't such a thing. In reality there's no real reason that when creating a character it should look like you. I assume everyone watches and enjoys movies where the main character doesn't look like them. Why should it be different for video games?

A lot of male characters in games kind of look like they’re compensating for something. I’ll play any character type though - like the variety.

As someone who played korean MMOs for most of his youth, women were the only choice as every male skin looked like he's wearing painted cardboard lmao.

I'm gay and I still play women characters in most games lol

For me the voice is what matters. Male Commander Shepard, Female V.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

I agree that voice is what matters, but I feel that femshep is way better than male shep. Agreed on V, though.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Female V has such an amazing voice oh my god. Not like every other voice actor in the game isn't an absolute genius, but man does she hits the mark all the time

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Keanu Reeve's voice acting is pretty sub-par most of the time. And even in Phantom Liberty, especially in the beginning Female V (played by Cherami Leigh) sounded a bit off, as if she needed to find V's voice again after how much time was in between the main game and the DLC. But other than that I have to agree, top-notch work. Made in Poland ;)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 12 hours ago

It's the best Keanu acting possible! I love the man to bits, he's an absolute treasure and should be cherished, but he can't voice act for shit.

Since the dawn of gaming I always picked the more aesthetic choice, which mostly is the female choice. Never cared about the "u play woman? U gay!" Idiots...

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I never understood how me preferring to look at a female figure while playing a game was ever something to question...

Easy! drumroll It is still drumrolling Toxic Masculinity! Those that fear to become gay after a prostate-exam :-)

“Everyone that has ever even thought about roleplaying as a different gender is secretly closeted trans” is one of my least favorite takes of all time.

Gender is bullshit! Try shit! It’s a perfectly healthy and normal thing everyone should be comfortable with, don’t make it into a thing.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Gender is not bullshit, gender is real and trans people are real. Stop spreading stupid anti-trans rhetoric. People who feel and express a certain gender are more likely to be that gender, even if that gender doesn't align with their assigned gender at birth.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

“me not being able to label anyone that breathes funny as a closeted trans person is anti-trans rhetoric” is certainly one of the takes of all time.

It’s the exact same shit as “teehee they’re intelligent they must be autistic” or “oh you organize your socks you must have adhd/ocd”. It’s not suddenly okay to assume shit about people when it’s that they’re not cis/neurotypical.

Gender is whatever the fuck any individual wants it to be for them. I like how that other commentor described it, gender anarchy.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Being trans isn't a choice and our society already stigmatizes being trans so people deny it or won't accept it and make up dumb excuses to not accept the fact they are a trans girl. But people need to come out because being closeted isn't healthy, and the sooner the better. Why are you so against trans people coming out and accepting themselves as trans?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

People can do whatever the fuck they want, to themselves. You don’t get to tell them what they are or aren’t. There is nothing different between calling a stranger an egg and telling someone you don’t believe they’re really trans.

Anyways, this conversation will clearly never go anywhere productive. I hope your real world day goes better.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 23 hours ago

No, there is a big difference between trying to help someone discover themselves and denying a person's gender identity. To argue that they are the same is Transphobic TERF garbage meant to spread the idea that being trans is wrong or abnormal.

You are right to acknowledge that this will never be productive. Arguing with TERFs rarely is.

Gender is bullshit! Try shit!

isn't that the entire point though? if you consistently like doing this, you might not be what you think you are, and thats ok too.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 22 hours ago

No, I dress very feminine and sometimes play girls in games as well, but I'm not a girl, I'm a transmasc. I know for sure I'm trans also, there isn't a shred of doubt in my mind. I utterly hate so many things about being AFAB, especially my periods (those cause crippling dysphoria for me 😔 ).

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It’s entirely possible, but that’s something for every individual to find out for themselves. You can be a confidently cis dude and find it enjoyable to have a female avatar, correlation == causation.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

correlation vs causation is irrelevant. The important thing is that there are no absolutes.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah, this sort of shit has gotten under my skin since identity stuff started exploding into public discourse.

If gender is a construct, why the fuck are we still using traditionally masculine and feminine actions/interests to prescribe identity? What gives anyone the right to prescribe someone else's identity?

[–] [email protected] -2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Because gender is not a construct you stupid TERF, gender is real and trans people are real. Get that through your thick head.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Is this the rare non-binary hating but trans supportive individual? I don’t get it.

Gender being a construct doesn’t mean you can’t willingly put yourself into that pre constructed idea, you can be whatever you like. It’s prescribing it to others that’s fucked up.

Regardless, nobody as angry as you has ever convinced anyone of anything, nor will anyone ever convince you of anything. I’m sure the world is harsh towards you, and I’m sorry you feel the need to match that energy.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 17 hours ago

Thank you. That was the point I was trying to make. Anyone can be whatever they want. Categorizing others is the problem, and one that feels especially wrong for me to keep seeing come from the LGBTQIA+ and ally/adjacent communities (please don't nitpick me on terminology here, my point is that it seems to be coming from the people who I would expect to be better about this than other groups).

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

And this is why I call myself a gender anarchist

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Exactly! The fact I'm taking oestrogen and wearing pretty clothes is totally unrelated. Still cis BTW.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I notice your pronouns are she/her -- are you a cis woman then?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 23 hours ago

I'm trans - the "still cis btw" was a little jokey joke

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

Unrealistic. Lacks modded bazoongas bigger than character's head.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

Listen to "lady of the dark" from Sabaton, you'll automatically create a woman character named Milunka whatever gender you are.

You'll be fully immersed and you'll feel Serbian even if you're from another country !
