News and Discussions about Reddit

Welcome to !reddit. This is a community for all news and discussions about Reddit.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules

Rule 1- No brigading.

**You may not encourage brigading any communities or subreddits in any way. **

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.

Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.

**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

:::spoiler Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

MODERATORS

Warning: Elon Musk now has Huffman bending the knee. Whitepeopletwitter, iselondeadyet and loads of other Elon critical subs have been banned or suspended.

Just a warning, Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech, it is compromised.

Last time I checked you couldn't start throwing death threats, addresses, names , relatives addresses and names, willy nilly on a private platform, then complain about being banned from it when the admins of the subreddit don't do their jobs complying with said private company TOS

That's not free speech

That ship sailed years ago.

It was always against the rules to do that. Nothing changed, except (from what I heard, I don't use Reddit anymore so correct me if I'm wrong) mods stopped enforcing the rule with regards to Musk, Musk put the spotlight on it, and Reddit (a shitty corporation trying desperately to be profitable) couldn't really do anything but enforce the rule.

It is true that Huffman is an asshole and probably likes the guy, but if it was some other public figure I don't think the outcome would be different.

Maybe good for us

The warrant canary died almost a decade ago. it hasn't been a safe place for a very long time.

Number of people surprised by this turn of events: 0

[–] [email protected] 26 points 2 days ago

Jesus, and I thought notorious piss baby Steve Huffman could not possibly get any more pathetic.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Be a real shame if someone made an bot that creates 2 Elon critical subredits for every 1 that was banned.

Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech

Friendly reminder of when spez, many years ago, literally just changed a user's comment, and then went on to not be immediately fired over this insane breach of everything to do with customer relations.

Was that while he was a moderator of /r/jailbait?

Not feeling so bad about receiving a random banhammer now

[–] [email protected] 90 points 2 days ago (3 children)

What the fuck how is this happening without anyone in the US really doing anything

[–] [email protected] 24 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Bread and circuses. As long as they aren't starving, and the forth estate only covers media circuses. Not actually reporting. They'll never know.

Based on the people I interact with daily basically no one realizes this is happening. Outside of the IT department no one realizes or cares. I asked how we were doing to deal with tariffs on electronics we regularly used a while back and was quietly told that was a political statement and shouldn't be brought up.

Now we have no plan and I'm too bummed to be smug about it.

Again, this is just my anecdotal view.

I had this conversation over Christmas with my family. As horrible as everything public is, I'm arguably more worried about how the cyber world. Nothing is private, the info is controlled, and the masses are far too ignorant to have any idea how fucked everything is. I mentioned something about how tik Tok is just a data collection so for China, and I got, "whatever, they already have all of my information". I can't then go on to explain why everything is so bad, because nobody knows anything about computers, and the newest generation coming up is arguably worse than boomers, because they've only ever know smartphones and tablets.

Half the IT department i work in built new gaming rigs ahead of time. The other half is non-gamers and republicans.

Id be relieved my work hardware is newer and good for a few years, if i wasn't a federal employee waiting to be fucked over.

Glad to hear you won't have to upgrade. Hopefully you can stay under the radar, but I definitely get this would be a rough time to be working for the fed. I sincerely wish you luck (and patience)

[–] [email protected] 71 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Ahh the classic US move, pretend the problem doesn't exist until it causes massive problems, then blame someone else.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Funny, that's the exact same vibe I always get from street interviews in Russia.

It's been working out for the rich and powerful so far. Why wouldn't it work for us too?

obligatory 'fuck spez'. also reddit was compromised a long time ago.

Scary that they banned WhitePeopleTwitter, a sub with 3M+ subscribers.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago

Ironically most of those 3 million are the "right" color to them. Can't take the heat once you start burning down the kitchen I guess.

Embrace our superior locally raised [email protected], or the more inclusive and not twitter-centric [email protected]

What? But I was told that elon is "not the fed" and nothing would happen to reddit who would fight tooth and nail for everyone's rights.

Gasp, shock, and amazement.

We're overdue for Rexit, round 2.

If you're still there, advertise us!

Pick an instance without "lemmy" in the name. Say something like: "Want to check out the fediverse? Go to discuss.online!"

Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech, it is compromised.

I think that happened a long time ago

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Was it really ever a safe place for free speech?

[–] [email protected] 32 points 2 days ago

Back before they went "independent," kind of. When Sears sent legal threats to take down a post exploiting an xss bug to make a joke about grilling babies, reddit had a big public discussion on it, and ultimately left the post up

[–] [email protected] 103 points 2 days ago (1 children)
