I believe there was an episode of Black Mirror that showed that this was a heinous idea.
It's also an O'Brian must suffer episode in DS9.

Obrien is imprisoned for 20 years but it turns out he was implanted memories of imprisonment. He was only imprisoned for a few hours.Not sure if it's my Lemmy client but the spoiler doesn't work for me.

Same here. That is in my top 3 soul crushing Black Mirror episodes. The others are "15 Million Merits" and "White Bear". It can be hard to watch that show, especially the older seasons.
I really miss that sense of dread the older episodes invoked. I can't seem to find anything else like it, not even the best of new black mirror. I'll take recommendations of any medium really. It's one of my favorite genres? Vibes? Idk.
I’ve also been looking for that sort of thing. Only one I’ve found is electric sheep, and it’s not… idk it’s not quite as uncomfortable?
