Slam is what the kids use. Criticize is what their parents do to them.

Criticise is too long for a printed newspaper title. Editors are still stuck thinking about how the headline will look in print.

It's a whole two letters longer than slammed. I also argue that the double m is taking more space than the two extra letters.
