Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either [email protected] or [email protected].
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email [email protected]. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try [email protected] or [email protected]
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

As you know, I'm not the biggest LW fan, but even I wouldn't use an account defederated from LW, especially with SJW on top. You're missing probably 80% of the active communities, and 15% of the remaining are on lemmy.ml
Even with that, why is there no Californian or New York instance? Seems weird to me seen how populous and tech oriented those places are
Oh yes absolutely, sorry I seemed to have skipped over saying that:-). Leaving behind sth like 80% of the userbase isn't an ideal plan, plus they don't even want growth over there, and are quite prickly about what they allow or not.
I saw comments advocating for the literal genocide of all people in the USA who did not vote, which far from being received negatively had tens of upvotes, yet did not trigger the mods for reasons of "be nice"? So I suppose to be there, outside of the established "in-crowd", a new user would have just a terrible time trying to figure out what they want vs. not.
So I definitely get why you would not want to host it there:-). I was just responding to why you didn't even consider it "Lemmy" - it at least halfway is not indeed, with its version so far behind and such, even though I can see those users as they comment on posts throughout the Fediverse (but not in communities on LW ofc:-).
For some reason I was thinking that were was a NY instance that I had considered. Perhaps Discuss.Online? But it's harder (for me) to use that map as it shows all the 1-person instances, and the much larger ones don't seem distinguished. So I ended up looking through all of them top instances one by one, and then went with Discuss.Online, though am not certain that I am remembering correctly about it being the one I saw that was in NY, vs. some other one.
Though how many other servers do we need to do that for? Would it matter if one was in West vs. East Germany, or France? (Spain might bc of Catalina:-P) Those distances in the USA are quite large though.
Theres a ton of lemmy servers in Cali, but just no official one. Its all just one offs (I support one).
