I only have one real concern about Mamdani’s mayorship.
You know damn well that the porks will be conspiring to sabotage his term. False flags to artificially increase the crime rate, porks hypocritically using union tactics to band together and go on strike to achieve their demands (mass layoffs, organized wage cuts, organized rent hikes) if not flat out sic the CIA on Mamdani.
Does anyone know how Mamdani plans to defend against the inevitable bourgeoise temper tantrum if he wins?
I don’t think they will stage literal crime but I do think they will do what the right always does when they aren’t in power and that’s shining a unnecessarily bright light on existing crime that isn’t normally unusual and just overly report on it to give the perception that it’s happening more.
You know the answer is no. Whenever a socdem wins an election, they do one of two things: either a neoliberal pivot after winning, or submit to local bourgeois sabotage until the public blames “progressives” and drives them out of office. Wielding power against the bourgeoisie is “authoritarian”, so the only choices left are to wield it against the working class or wait to be replaced by someone else who will.
Yup. Last time people were excited about a socdem mayor was Brandon Johnson and I’ll give you one guess about how that panned out
Zohran and Johnson are very different candidates with very different bases and experience
Does his experience or base change the fundamental power imbalance between an elected politician and the bourgeoisie state? Will he mobilize that base to fight his opposition when necessary? The work you’re putting in is admirable and I respect it
I think charitably, Zohran wants to engage a Red Vienna style policy in good faith. And that was a fairly successful position. But it's hard to see how to do that without mass organisational support from the working classes.
I know what you’re saying, and this is by no means a revolution, but it is monumental progress towards removing the boot from the neck of the working class, should we win.
Generally, the idea here is make a democratic socialist mayoralty not just a one-off thing. We want to keep working class communities invested in community and political projects that actually work for us.
I know what the intention is, and I also know the forces arrayed against you that will undercut and hamstring every effort put forward. Best of luck, I sincerely hope you win
I mean I'd not blink if the ruling class tried to sink him in the election proper with a republican candidate, Corbyn style. Would be hard to do in NYC but they'd fucking try.
It’s gonna be a four person race bc if cuomo loses the dem nomination he’s gonna run under the self created fake party “fight and deliver” in the general so it would be Zohran-Adams-Cuomo-plus whoever the republican ends up being
I know the primaries use ranked choice voting but do the actual elections?
Nah just the primaries the election will be FPTP
I think something similar happened in San Francisco where the cops just refused to do their jobs because they were unhappy with the DA, and eventually he got recalled
Happened in Portland too
Porkland
I can talk more about this if I do an in depth breakdown for sure, but in short it’s been something we’ve been aware of and planned for
If I were him, I would accept that I was at odds with the power structure, but rather than compromise or conform, i would just put everything on social media. Anything that can be justified as being made available for the public good in terms of trying to get things done, make these slimeballs fuck him over extremely publicly. Destroy the facade of democracy further.
That's all there really is to do, imo, but he could probably get it done.
I keep banging this drum, but one bonus of a possible Mamdani win is seeing the NYT beg and plead for people to “pwetty pwease vote republican! Maybe finawwy the normals in Real America^TM^ will like us and see we’re not so bad!”
