They have seen a meteoric rise in recent years. Their sister/front organisations like ANSWER, Codepink, People's Forum, BTnews have all become household names. When I look at protests in the U.S., it seems so many of them are organised directly, or indirectly, by them. In comparison, organisations like the CPUSA or the DSA are lacking behind.

How and why?

As in our comrade Karl Liebknecht, co-founder of the KPD? All these years I’ve been saying “LEEB-necked”, two syllables. But the I heard Matt Christman say “Leeb-KUH-neck-et” (four syllables). And I realized I don’t really know why I was saying it like I was. Anyone know how to actually say it?

You never hear "Aw man, the new owners are awesome! Everything's so much better now!", it's always a downgrade, usually a significant one. It's never about improvement and always about cutting costs and leaving the buyee company to die.

I identify differently depending on the context.

When around comrades, I will identify as a Marxist-Leninist, as this is the most precise definition of what I hold to. I generally don't use this other than around comrades because no one else has any idea of what it means.

If I'm around people who at least sort of know what Marxism is, I'll call myself a Marxist. But in my experience this is pretty rare. Or this is what I will default to around people who I know are leftist broadly. I feel like "Marxist" is accurate enough where getting into the details of M-L isn't really necessary.

But when I'm around most normies, I will identify as a socialist. I think it's accurate enough to convey to people who do not have a very developed political understanding what I hold to. "Socialist" at the same time conveys a commitment to radical change well beyond the current Republican/Democrat paradigm, while not, for example, putting my job in jeopardy if I call myself a socialist to co-workers.

So the obvious question is why I don't call myself a communist very often IRL, even though I am one. I have before and used it a bit interchangably with M-L among comrades, but I don't use it around people I don't know well and know they are down with it. What I have found with the people in my broader social circle is such a huge lack of political understanding that calling myself a communist only shuts people down. When it comes to Americans, I think it's easy to overestimate their political understanding. I used to think most Americans just think communism is when "everyone is equal". What I've found is worse than that: it's more like people just have this vague notion that "communism = evil". They have no idea what it's about other than decades of propaganda that just equates communism as the ideology of our enemies and those who want to destroy America. So to most Americans, a communist is just someone who is "very bad person" who wants to destroy America (I mean, death to Amerikkka of course, but it's so much more than that). My own parents just think that communism means atheism and can't explain it more than that.

I totally understand the idea that we shouldn't shy away from calling ourselves communists. We need to normalize the idea because communism specifically is what's needed to save the planet. But idk, at this time and place in the US it feels like trying to do this just closes more doors than it opens, at least with the politically ignorant (most people).

The damn vid is not available anywhere else.

Extra bonus annoyance - it's only available if you're in/near Seattle. Or if you use a VPN like I did. I don't know much but I tried everything I could think of and I got nowhere. For example - I tried to download the source src.

War; #108; The Knife Edge of Deterrence - American Archive of Public Broadcasting

Out on the beach for a while today, i ran across two people waving for attention; turns out they were stuck right past the '4wd only past this point' sign. I got them unstuck, made sure they didnt need anything else and was about to head on my way. One of the women offered me a couple road sodas, and i declined- i havent drank alcohol in about 13 years and have no inclination to start again. The other woman actually scoffed, and said 'what man isnt going to accept a beer from a couple women on the beach, are you a f-slur?'

So i left.

Why the fuck do people who drink alcohol act this way around people who dont drink?

Not really asking for advice just curious what others experience is. The patron in question is a cooky old hippie artist lady I have known for decades.

The first question is adressing the lives of everyone everywhere. But on this topic, I'm also curious about white people, who may feel like they have no racial identity. It is often said the white people have no culture. I feel like I agree that they don't when it comes to racially based things, but I also feel like they can have culture in other ways.

I've been trying to verify my phone number for about a week. I doubt it's an outage of a week. Am I crazy or is the Telecom monopoly blocking verification codes from RedNote?

My desire to leave has recently rapidly increased but I have a partner here and really close friends I want to be with as long as possible. I wish I could stay and establish roots but that was never an option given healthcare and the inevitably of the current downturn though I expected to have a lot more time before it got this bad tbh

I remember reading once about a movement trying to keep French from evolving (lol). And I’ve been thinking about how we have old English and Middle English and modern English, and how to someone living in the grey area they wouldn’t have known they were living in a time of their language being revolutionised (?). Or maybe people did? I’m not a linguist lol.

But yeh it got me thinking, is English a language that is particularly in flux compared to say, Korean? If it is, what makes a language more or less fast in its development over time? More or less insular/isolated societies of speakers must enter into it I guess?

I dunno I guess I’m just shooting the shit because I find language interesting. Let’s talk about interesting linguistic things. I swear I am not high.

Not Star Trek:

Kermit the Frog: a paragon of leadership, great outlook on life. My favorite celebrity

George Constanza: his wisdom has helped me through most professional environments. If you look annoyed people think you're busy etc is crucial life advice.

Columbo: An absolute icon of a human being. Everything I wanna be without being a cop.

Trek:

Plain Simple Garrak: great advice on how to bullshit and deal with bullshitters. It's all true, especially the lies

The Sisco: punch Q

I would assume living in more pleasant warm climates would incentive less dense planning since walking/travel between locations would be less unpleasant and also energy consumption for heating wouldn't be as in high demand. Meanwhile cities in colder climates would incentives dense planning that allowed for people to get what they needed without having to leave a building, or not having to walk far. Also housing more in less buildings could conserve heating energy.

Yet here is a picture of Rio Di Janeiro

And here is Nuuk Greenland

In fact looking at a lot of extreme north communities, it seems they prefer single family housing that's fairly spread out, this is the case in Scandinavia, Alaska, Greenland and Russia. Idk, just seems weird to me.

Most AES countries use a bench trial system for criminal law, but this seems like possibly taking power away from the workers in important matters. What was the thought process behind using bench trials for criminal court in AES nations?

(For reference, a bench trial is where one or more judges/magistrates decide the outcome of a trial as opposed to a jury of people)

I doubt I'll get many actual answers, but without doxing yourself, did you volunteer in any antifascist group abroad, or did you consider it?

If so, how did it go?

I'm asking because I know there are still places with important antifascist volunteer presence (Rojava, Myanmar...), and I thought maybe there's a fringe chance any of you has gone there.
