That anyone can be taken in by this points to a deeper societal sickness of which AI is only a symptom.

This was known back with the earliest "AIs". They just repeated the question back to the user, but that's enough to engage someone who's alienated. It gives them the feeling that someone is listening to them and someone cares. Even though it's just a series of conditional statements in some assembly code.

The thing is that even people who knew how ELIZA worked still got taken in by it.

It's the only game I've ever platinumed lol. Is not even particularly great, they just really nailed the combat and did a good job with the companion banter

Veilguard is the most egregious of all these, I think it was a pretty decent game. Probably one of the better BioWare games in a long time.

It was a bit goofy sure, but the game loop and the character dialogue was fun and engaging and made me want to play more just to hear the interactions between everyone.

I remember having a pretty long debate about how the framing of pitbulls as "naturally aggressive" animals had its roots in prenology and race science, then for a while thought I might have over estimated on that, but it's good to be proven right sometimes

I always found it interesting that the Tiananmen Square protests happened in 1989 right when all the other "pro-democracy" protests in the socialist world did, but it didn't succeed.

I think that's on the level of like saying that the different native reservations in the USA would become separate states. Except not really because the Autonomous regions actually have significantly more autonomy than the reservations do.
