I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Finding driver's and IRQ settings for my Creative Labs Soundblaster. I fought with OSS, ALSA, and Jack to enable real-time audio. I heard my audio get garbled, unfixable without a reboot. All those moments will be lost in time, like using Subversion for source control. Time to reinstall.

You haven't been using Linux for long enough.

I remember when you literally couldn't install it on a laptop. I remember having to download wireless driver binary blobs in order to get only a select few WiFi adapters to work. I remember printing being a roll of the dice. I remember hardware graphics acceleration being non existent. I remember when gaming on Linux was Doom, Quake, any of the various Tux games, and Battle of Wesnoth. I remember when webcams just straight up weren't supported. Installing Linux? Prepare to download "disk sets" that were lettered and numbered based on what software you wanted, and each one would go on individual floppy disks.

I used to have to look up hardware that Linux supported and make purchases based on that.

I know things are far from perfect nowadays, but I just wanted to point out that we stand on the shoulders of giants. I bought my kids some Lenovo Ryzen based laptops for Christmas, was able to boot Linux from a USB drive, install it, install steam, put their favorite games on there and it all just worked. Not a single hiccup.

Just wanted to lend some perspective.

I miss being able to use bitmapped fonts back in the Gnome 1.x days.

Hot take: I'm fine with Bethesda taking their time to release a game if that means it'll be higher quality. There are thousands of games released a week. Hi play something else in the meantime.

I can't believe there isn't an NHTSA regulation about manual egress from an unpowered vehicle. This is just bonkers.

I use this same setup. Definitely recommend.

Even though I already pay for my mom, and a different geographical location about an hour away, last week when the kids and I tried to watch Netflix we got an unstoppable prompt to upgrade again for another $6.99. I hit cancel and it didn't do anything. So I closed the app, reopened it, and the pop up again. Couldn't watch Netflix.

A few minutes later I got an email from Netflix saying thanks for upgrading. They charged me anyway. I cancelled my entire account as a result. They're never getting another nickel from me.

To co-sign on the stupidity of embedded washing machine firmware, if we lose power, the next time you start the washing machine you're presented with an error message saying the power has failed. Like, no duh. You have to acknowledge the error message before you can start a new load.

That's the real problem with historians. They always talk about the past and not the future.

I've never worked in the service industry, so that might still be a thing, but even if it is, that shouldn't have to exist.

They missed a step. "Waiter is paid below the already sad minimum wage because tips are somehow factored into their paycheck. "

Also don't forget the folks working in the back of the house. Tip if you're able, despite our shitty system.

I'm 43, almost 44, years old and went through a bought of alcoholism during the early part of the pandemic. I went through treatment and have been fine since. However, I can't help but feel that all the news in the last few months is just the worst. Between the AI bullshit, the wars, the effects of capitalism, and the political situation in general it's just the worst. Is it just me or have other folks noticed the same trend?

Edit: I should have also mentioned the enshitification of everything tech related.

Edit 2: Thanks for all the thoughtful replies. For some more context, yes I'm American and live in a state that's about to ban the wearing of masks in public. I haven't had a drink in over year and have been in therapy for 3 years. I don't watch any news sources and rarely read media websites. But yet, that information seeps into my life somehow. I donate blood, I make charitable donations, and try to live a good life. I have 2 amazing kids and a great wife. It's just hard to not end up in a doomer mindset at times. A Bitcoin company bought a power plant up here that has an existing lease to use a lake as cooling water, and it's heated up the lake to the point that it's killing fish.
