IMO, yes. HDDs are always going to be a bit noisy, but the consumer grades keep it fairly classy. The couple of HGST drives I got from ServerPartDeals are noisy in the "grating" way. The volume is similar but the noise is not in the normal pleasant range. I am only fine with it because my server is in another room.

Skype basically worked like this back in the day. It had it's ups but for day-to-day users it was rather unintuitive so Microsoft moved to a server system when they took it over. I am pretty sure there are still p2p chat systems around though, I just don't know any of them by name.

This is not a small task so apologies for overstepping that a bit, but MusicBee on Linux. I have been trying out Linux music players and none of them are anywhere even close. Mainly I miss the auto playlists feature and the full support for custom tags, but a lot of features could be replaced with scripts as long as the program allowed easy shortcuts and menu options to send files to those scripts.

I'd actually love to make it myself or contribute to a project to get it there, but I have a feeling many projects don't wish to become that "bloated" or the base wouldn't be much better than simply starting from scratch. But if anyone knows projects that are actively taking commits or are close in feature set...

I forget the exact reasons but I believe it was due to a perceived bias. I don't read BBC so can't comment but they described it similarly to how a liberal would describe Fox News.

We should keep the "Opinion:" prefix on titles. Without it, these statements sound like evidence-based fact.

I knew this was happening today when I got emails from every institution known to man about a "disruption" in the ~~force~~ Canada Post service.

Did they really put the power button on the bottom? Lmao that's up there with the magic mouse charging port.

Supernault is actively considering having the flagship loops.video server function as the centralised service for the For You algorithm.

That sounds... potentially counter to the goals of the Fediverse. If it's its own open-source and hostable project with an easy switch for admins to provide a different algorithm then I can see how it would be a big leg up for better discovery, but if it just locks you into phoning home to loops.video then that is terrible.

I have thought for a while though that search / indexing should be a separate Fediverse service to allow even tiny instances to make use of large-scale search, but only as long as it remains open for anyone to host an indexer.

And then they, too, can be defederated by salty Mastodon admins. At least I saw a lot of instances talk of defederating BBC when I still was trying to enjoy Mastodon.

All official BBC accounts, yes. It has locked signups.

Wait, when did they switch names? First I've heard of it, but it makes sense to negate their terrible rep. Edit: 2021, according to the article. I didn't think they'd mention it.

If you're not getting cold, then no. If you lived in a colder climate or had worse heat generation then yes.

I use the location tracking of Google Maps/Google Timeline constantly for work, and it's exceedingly helpful to know when I was at certain cities, buildings, etcetera. Of course, this means I'm basically signing my soul away to Google. But I can't really find any alternative location tracking apps, even though I would have thought there would be lots available. Are there any good alternatives out there?

The closest I found was Owntracks, but it doesn't work for me for a couple of reasons. Primarily, it doesn't tell me the places I've been, only the latitude/longitude. That isn't helpful. I want to know I was at X or Y convenience store and when my last visit was. Secondly of course, the interface was extremely lacking and I didn't like that it was split across two websites and an app. Why even have a map in the Android app if it doesn't show my location data??

Title, basically. I know I have issues, but I couldn't say if it's depression, ADD, or just general problems. Is the only reason to have a diagnosis so you know what to work on, or are there other benefits such as easier access to therapy?

My question is meant specifically for Canada, but feel free to chip in from other countries. :)

My introduction to Vocaloid. I knew of it before this, of course, but this was the first song that really made me say "WOW" and begin looking into more! Big fan of all of Azari's songs.

According to the uploader:

Byron, Georgia — On Friday July 15, 2022 Byron Police officers were given a look out on a SUV driving reckless on GA Hwy 42 coming into town. The caller said the vehicle was driving into the other lane almost hitting oncoming traffic. When the vehicle got to the intersection of Hwy 42 and Hwy 49 witnesses blocked the vehicle in. Byron Police officers arrived on scene and attempts were made to talk to the driver and she was uncooperative and would not talk to officers or respond to commands. Officers placed Stop Sticks under her tires to deflate the tires if she drove off. After several minutes the driver backed into a car stopped behind her and then pulled forward hitting a Byron Police officer and a Byron Police car.

The driver then backed up again and pulled forward hitting two witnesses and another Byron Police car and drove going north on Hwy 49 with one flat tire from the Stop Sticks. Officers attempted to block the car and she backed into a third Byron Police Car then drove forward hitting a Byron Police car for the second time causing serious damage to the car. The suspect continued on Hwy 49 for a short distance where Byron Officers were able to block her in and take her into custody. The driver was identified as 24-year-old Sierra Hibbert of Warner Robins, GA. She also had a small child with her that was not hurt in the incident. No officers or citizens were injured seriously in the incident. The Peach County Sheriffs assisted during the incident and is handling the investigation and criminal charges against Hibbert.

I have wanted to go on a road trip for a while, just driving off to nearby towns in my hatchback and exploring. I'd start small, like a day or three. The main thing holding me back is uncertainty of what to bring and how to do it, amongst other issues. I think I can figure out the food and sleep, but I was wondering:

  • Where to access showers?
  • Where to refill water?
  • Is it worth bringing a tent (could I set it up outside of a campsite)?
  • Where can I park when I need to sleep (that I won't get in trouble for)?
  • Am I missing anything else?

Was hoping some of you might have advice. I don't have a whole lot of good people to go to about this IRL.

Edit: Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to respond!
