News and Discussions about Reddit

Welcome to !reddit. This is a community for all news and discussions about Reddit.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules

Rule 1- No brigading.

**You may not encourage brigading any communities or subreddits in any way. **

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.

Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.

**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

:::spoiler Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

MODERATORS

A bit ago I posted on reddit about how gameboys (handheld console) were getting more expensive and Scalpers were making it worse. For a bit the post maintained in the double digits with the occasional scalper downvoting. I went to bed and the next morning- Boom. I had been spam downvoted by people who's main activity is on Scalper subreddits and marketplaces.

Those things are going up in value? I got a few Gameboy colors, one of them is Pokemon Yellow Edition, they're so old I'd have to dig them out of my dad's basement somewhere. I figured the switch killed the market since it can play all those old games.

Yeah a bunch of scalpers + shops +YTers are zooming up the price.

How do you know the down votes came from scalpers and not people that just disagreed with you?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 8 months ago

Had a look at some of the commenters profiles, 1 littlerally said in their bio "proud scalper". Many had posted in various sale groups at very convenient times and a couple I traced to various other sites.

That is something that can happen here too, eventually. Not by scalpers, but still.

@Ignacio downvotes don't mean so much here though. Kbin doesn't federate them, Beehaw doesn't even have them.

Kbin has accountability, it’s nice.

I might not understand your post, it doesn't federate but it has accountability? what do you mean by that

[–] [email protected] 4 points 8 months ago (2 children)

@Pika I think they are referring to how votes are public on Kbin so we can all see who upvoted or downvoted a comment.

They are in Activity Pub too it's just Lemmy doesn't have a function for seeing them.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

that makes sense, thank you!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Fun fact! You can actually see them in the modlog. I believe so, when I was a lemmy.world staff member we were able to see who did them.

@Zealousideal_Fox900 that's interesting!!

I love the fediverse. It feels fun learning and engaging with it.

Yeah sadly lemmy is slowly dying and the .world team are just making it worse.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

time to all move to another server then

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago (2 children)

If you are on kbin you only see kbin upvotes and downvotes.

It also lists the upvotes downvotes and shares

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

oh interesting, I have a kbin account I traverse but I never noticed lol

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

@Pika it's in the more tab under activity.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

@NoIWontPickaName we can see upvotes from other instances too, it's just the downvotes we don't.

Some of us experience this on Lemmy too.

There are some communities here where users plunge headfirst in groupthought and if you cross their path, good gravy will the down votes flood in. It's not about being right or wrong, it's about refusing to acknowledge alternative points of view.

Water off a duck's back. If Lemmy needs more kindness, be the kindness you seek. That's my philosophy.

If you happen to feel like firefox/mozilla could do better by doing anything different, go to any other sub than firefox. I dont remember if it was on world of ml but I left because of this exact thing.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 8 months ago

That’s my experience here with /technology…god forbid you like your Apple product - everyone there seems dedicated to shitting on your likes, and by extension, you.

Ha! Fat finger syndrome! Caught me before the edit.

I find it weird you called it "groupthought" when the word is "groupthink", and you even linked to the groupthink article.
