I am looking for mods!

1. The "good" part of our community means we are pro-empathy and anti-harassment. However, we don't intend to make this a "safe space" where everyone has to be a saint. Sh*t happens, and life is messy. That's why we get things off our chests.

2. Bigotry is not allowed. That includes racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and religiophobia. (If you want to vent about religion, that's fine; but religion is not inherently evil.)

3. Frustrated, venting, or angry posts are still welcome.

4. Posts and comments that bait, threaten, or incite harassment are not allowed.

5. If anyone offers mental, medical, or professional advice here, please remember to take it with a grain of salt. Seek out real professionals if needed.

6. Please put NSFW behind NSFW tags.

I know, I get it. Echo chambers are bad m'kay?

But hear me out. Most of the interactions I had on there were essentially me fighting against the news for about 11 years. Most of the people I argued with were reactionary and repeated everything on TV. It was frustrating and it was awful.

I gained little insight into what was going on by interacting with them, and in retrospect, I could've been no better off here. And honestly, I feel less on edge about current affairs being around people who get it. I'm one degree removed from crazy.

I'm glad there are spaces on the web where I can get away from all of that nonsense. So, I guess, in a sense, thank you for being here.

It's not more left, it's more diverse. There his re to us than left or right. That 1 or 2 dimensional chart doesn't capture us.

I don't buy into the echo chamber bullshit. At least the way people look at it. Folks went to places with people they got along with weather it be bars, or church, or clubs, or whatever. The echochamber is more something a person needs to do individually. Maybe get out and converse with someone from another club or do a diverse enough amount of stuff that you will encounter some folks with differeing views but you don't need to make your day to day annoying. Keep an open mind but you don't have to abandon everything. Its like lets take a chrisitian with a liberal enough faith philosophy that they accept multiple faiths views on gods even if not their denomination. Now expecting that same person to be open minded about a group that believes and and worships satan would just be rediculous. Its funny I am using this example though because I am athiest but I was looking for something were a person was flexible but not willing to throw out the core idea.

also echo chambers arise due to algorithms controlled by people who very specifically want you to end up in an echo chamber pushing horrible opinions, worrying about ending up in a left-wing echo chamber is like worrying about ending up in a room filled with friendly dogs, oh no the horrors...

What I really like about it is that with the right-wing noise curbed (mostly), it's much easier to recognize the left-wing noise. And I'm not talking about the tankies; I'm referring to the traditionally "mocked by the right" "social justice warrior" kind of thing. Yeah, there's some real nutters in that world, too, and it's important to recognize that.

Word. I find it difficult to talk about capitalism here because most responses are "capitalism bad" with no afterthought, just parroting some meme. There are more nuanced opinions here than on reddit and popular social media, but not as many as there should be. And the anti-centrist memes have definitely caught on here, where trying to find a middle-ground, a place, manner and tone to talk to each other is mocked.

It's definitely better than reddit here, but it could be better.

I like it because in many ways capitalism is bad (so I sorta like to here the extreme because we are pretty close to the opposite extreme now) and socialism to. When extreme. Im way against where the us is at and I think we were to capitalistic even in the 70's. I don't think capitalism should be allowed in any case were there is no choice or for necessities and even then should be well regulated and if something has to be run privately and either has no choice or is a necessity then its going to have to be very heavily regulated.

On that specific topic, I find that many many people conflate capitalism with free markets.

It’s informative to drink in how much the right parrots one another without discussion. You learn the bylines. You learn the “it’s because…”, and the “what about”s.

There’s no discussion. No argument. No inkling that Trump could, maybe, possibly, slightly? be wrong about anything, so there’s no discussion. Only repeat statements numbering like images in an infinity mirror.

And it quickly turns into no discussion with you. Statements start with: I know you don’t like (guns) but…

Actually I own….

But I own a…

Are you listening…

No, you hate guns.

And so on. It’s more than a little horrifying.

The left has its problems, but when you throw a bunch of cats in a big bag together and tell them to be nice it’s at least varied, interesting, and a bit unpredictable. There’s room for discussion, always, and everyone on the left can be wrong.

Yup, on Lemmy I often hear substantiated points that I hadn't considered. I've gone into rabbit holes because someone linked to an analysis about a conflict, I've gained terminology I didn't know that I didn't know, found the reason why some events may be happening, like with Trumplethinskin's enigmatic inner machinations of his mind, and so many other little things. It's kinda nice.

Reddit has been increasingly unusable the last few years. There's too much AI bullshit now. It's impossible to feel like you're having a conversation anymore.

Big thing to note. The right is united under MAGA and Trump. Even GOP senators fall in line after saying outloud..."this will hurt my state and the people that voted for me".

The saddest thing. These same people will just vote them in again, why? Because they are team players. Anyone with an R by their name is an autofill.

People on the left are not just following a team. They have actual independent thought. The right is a hive mind.

It's most notable when someone on the right says something like, "Well what if Biden is in the Epstein files, should he be investigated?" and I say yes, and they're super surprised and don't know what to do with it. The idea that someone might not have infinite loyalty to one particular politician is crazy to them.

The idea that someone might have infinite loyalty to any politician seems crazy to me, but there it is.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 hours ago

100% correct. I have the same experience. When they say "insert democrat here" is on the list!

I say ok then, lock their ass up too! They always go quiet. Like they are amazed you want to lock up your team.

Real Americans don't play sides. We want anyone involved punished, just like the law is written.

I sorta feel bad about this because as the R has become worse my vote has been for the person without an R by their name and usually with a D near their name as its important R does not win. The good part I guess is I have been more focused on primaries and trying to get the best person in overall and will not vote based on the argument that this is the person best able to win the general.

People on the left are not just following a team. They have actual independent thought. The right is a hive mind.

These kinds of blanket generalizations don’t exactly suggest much “independent thought.”

Nor does speaking about “the right” as if the U.S. is the only country where a political right exists.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Sounds like you have never visited the tankie tryad.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 hours ago

tankies aren't lefties, they roleplay as lefties

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 hours ago

Pshaw. I mean, I hate saying anything bad about the left at all these days because of how much worse the right is.

But "they have independent thought"? "Not just following a team"? You're out of your mind. Or maybe you've never met a lefty.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 hours ago

There's certainly a line between "solidarity forever" and "leftist echo chamber" but I know for a fact it's not as fine as some of us worry. Just back your fellow leftists when they're doing lefty shit. Talk at them later if you have a bone to pick, but back them up against the right.

Raging against the ever right traveling Overton window felt like a fight I had no chance of ever winning

I can't afford a Sinclair Broadcast Group of my own to astroturf entire regions at a time 24/7

and I would need a LOT more than that to compete with the sheer scale of right wing operations
