To be fair it’s not like you have to actually straight up injest them to try. I’m sure there were protocols.

Like first you touch and wait a couple hours. If nothing happens try rubbing on your skin and waiting a couple hours. If nothing happens rub it in your mouth and wait a couple hours. If nothing happens chew a tiny bit and spit it out and wait a couple hours etc.

It’s not foolproof obviously. But its a lot safer than seeing a new shroom and full on eating it.

Spot on!

Read this is an old mycology book: Take a tiny nibble, wait 45 minutes, rinse and repeat with bigger bites.

Most shrooms are harmless or will just give you a bad stomach ache.

Huh. Well cool. I guess my intuition would help a little if i ended up in that situation. But at the same time i’m bedridden by disability so I’d be the first to die ;)

I recommend the book "How to invent everything" by Ryan North. It's humor, an instruction manual for stranded time travelers who have to recreate civilization. It includes a section on testing food for edibility. https://www.howtoinventeverything.com/

If you look at a closeup, they aren't similar. But from a thumbnail, yes absolutely. I'm kind of tired seeing his face lol
