Way too many popups on that page to even read the article :(

[–] [email protected] 2 points 15 hours ago

uBlock Origin on Firefox with the annoyances filters enabled takes care of that for me.

If you and me are rich white landowners from about 250 years ago, then yes.

If not, then no.

A lot of people who talk about "how bad they have it in America" have either:

A) Never left.

B) Never been here.

Some of you have no idea how good your life is in this country...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 hours ago

Many who love to talk about how great America is also have not left.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 15 hours ago

That assumes they can leave.

No, but I was born here against my will, so now I either have to prepare to fight fascism or find an exit before the powderkeg gets lit.

[–] [email protected] -4 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Oh brother... what country would you rather live in? Seriously?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

Here's a handy list. Just keeping scrolling til you get to the US, and until you get there I'd most likely be happier living there.

Are you:

  • Middle class or higher
  • White (Or counted as such by society when useful)
  • Cis-Male
  • Straight
  • Wanting to have 2.5 kids
  • Able bodied
  • Mentally well
  • Own a car and able to pay for gas

Then sure, it's for you. If one of these doesn't apply, the Founding Fathers would like you sold on the soap box they used to call for liberty to ring. America was made by out of touch elites for out of touch elites. Washington and Jefferson and Madison were not some common folk who worked their way up. Most were landowning slave drivers who raped the slaves they said they loved and didn't mistreat.

Some, like Franklin, were poor and worked their way up with connections and wit. And he never had any meaningful positions of office.

7/8 is not good enough for America. You could be a cis-male stiraght white American who is mentally and physically well, but poor, and America doesn't do enough for you.

If you are everything here but black? America hates you.

If you are everything here but disabled? America hates you.

If you are everything here but born female? America hates you.

If you are not the normalized status-quo of what America (or any country) thinks is the default, you're treated unfairly from the top down, and then socially from the top down. It's part of why intersectionality is important.

I do believe the song that this seems to be referencing was actually written as satire.

America was stolen for white male land owners and that has failed to change

[–] [email protected] -1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

So, what do you suggest? Give all the land back, and we all move to the ocean and die? How horrible is your life right now? What do you want others to do to make your life better?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 hours ago

Give all the land back

Yes, unironically this should be a long term goal at the very least for large portions

[–] [email protected] 84 points 1 day ago (5 children)

The US began with slavery.

Then slavery ended (with the prison exemption, but still...)

Only white male land owners had rights.

But eventually all white males had rights.

Then rights were expanded to black men.

Then to women.

Then segregation ended and interracial marriage is legal.

Now same-sex marriage is legal.

Soon we will have trans rights protections.

Don't give up. We've come a long way.

This nation was started by white land owners for white land owners. But it has since evolved. More people have rights than ever before in the history of this country.

Do not give up. We can't let 200+ years of history go to waste because of two four-year terms of one politician.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 day ago

This. America used to give so many fewer rights to all.

Yes, there are SERIOUS problems in America that are systemic, but they are fixable. We just need to keep going.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't think you understand.

Most of those 200 years aligns with Trump's agenda

He's not the deviation. Historically speaking, Trump is the norm.

That doesn't mean I'm giving up, but I'm not going to fool myself about the odds of success either.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

I think people are uncomfortable with how all the rights of modern America were forced from the hands of privileged white society. "Equality" is a threat from the perspective of the entitled.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 day ago

Beautiful comment!

... Do you disagree with their post?

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

This land is my land

This land ain't your land

If you don't get off

I'll blow your head off

I've got a shotgun

And you ain't got one

This land was made for me not you

[–] [email protected] -2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Please, explain to all of us how horrible your life is, and what the rest of us can do to change it?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 hours ago

Well, you could start by taking a break asking every single person on this thread how their life is terrible. That would make my life marginally better.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

it was taken from others and then divided out to a racist system of governance.

so like, no.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The older I get the less I think it was.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It took me years to understand everything I heard or learned about the USA was propaganda, wishful thinking, misdirection, folk lore etc. And even longer to notice nobody understands how it works now.

[–] [email protected] -2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Please, explain to us how horrible your life is, and where you'd like to live, if you could? I'm seriously asking?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 15 hours ago

Texas is the answer to all your questions. Why be anywhere else? I think you are confusing criticism of the establishment with wishing to leave
