Don't let the door hit your arse on your way out.

Why is everyone backing Israel? Like every country has this blind backing of their genocide and i don't understand.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago

Good riddance to all of them.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

Given the Italian artists in Eurovision come from Sanremo, good riddance I'd say

I will just leave this here and provide a few bullet points. See the original document for links to the sources.

KAN, supporting the genocide, apartheid and occupation

  1. KAN shared a video of Israeli children singing “We will annihilate everyone” in Gaza - link 1, link 2
  2. During the filming of a genocide-normalizing piece in Gaza, Major Bezalel Batit, Deputy Commander of the 931st Battalion, orders the murder of a Palestinian riding a bicycle, a war crime, on KAN’s camera: "I want to take this cyclist down. Strike him." - link
  3. Rotem Achihun, KAN’s news host writes and dedicates bombs to the "people of Gaza" - l

Political interference and political instrumentalization of Eurovision 14. Eran Cicurel, the editor of the international news desk at KAN Reshet Bet radio, admits that “The [Eurovision] song contest has long been more than just a musical event; it is a critical arena for Israeli advocacy” - link
15. Eden Golan performs rejected Eurovision song at UN on October 7 2024 - link
16. Isaac Herzog, the Israeli head of state, made a direct and unprecedented intervention to make sure Israel wouldn’t be excluded from Eurovision, saying that he contest was too important for Israel not to be represented

KAN, Eurovision 2024 21. During the livestream of Eurovision, KAN made extremely offensive and derogatory comments about other countries' participants, going as far as calling for the extermination of Nemo and Gåte (by calling them Amalek). Eurovision rules state that participating broadcasters “shall ensure that no contestant, delegation or country is discriminated and/or ridiculed in any manner”. The EBU acknowledged that these comments happened and confirmed that KAN's commentators have broken the rules. Still it did nothing and allowed Israel to remain and compete in the final - link 1, link 2, link 3, link 4, link 5
22. Several artists and delegations accused the Israeli delegation of harassment - link 1, link 2, link 3, link 4, link 5
23. A KAN employee ran a campaign against Bashar (Palestinian musician) in the Iceland national selection

At this rate "exterminate the gays" is apparently the intended vibe of Eurovision and the EBU, unless they kick Israel and its supporters out.

is apparently the intended vibe of Eurovision

I never cared or watched but from things I've seen (against my will) it looks like a big major-label-backed advertisement. And from what I know those lack morals. Is it close to how the real thing works?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

a big major-label-backed advertisement

Not necessarily, but a big major label can obviously see a benefit of having one of their upcomming artists take part in the competition. But if this were really true we'd see much bigger artists joining or the top artists blowing up much more often. Most of them don't end up with that many new fans once the competition is over, I guess because their song is too different from the rest of their music and they end up as one hit wonders like Loreen (the singer of Euphoria). Sometimes they do get a large following at first but within a year or two their new fanbase just slowly disappears. The only group that ever made it big because of Eurovision is ABBA.

What the hell is Israel doing in the Eurovision anyway? Do they even have a square centimetre or land in Europe? Kick out the warmongers.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

because they’re part of the EBU… but also we aussies are part of it… eurovision isn’t about geographic area. it seems most “euro” things are kinda more “with ties to europe” these days. i think arguing on the basis of geography is a losing strategy in a heavily globalised world

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes, I agree. Make the whole world German 🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪 Then nobody can complain about borders as we will all be united under one glorious flag and culture.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

as an outsider, i literally don’t care about the countries involved… the EU is a model that works quite well (it has its flaws, but most other things have much bigger flaws)… if it’s all german, i mean, and…? if it works it works… i don’t know which parts are german and which are… french i guess? vs everything else… it’s a good model, and if countries willingly want to join in on a fun little cultural moment thennnnn where’s the harm in that?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

Yes, like supporting genocide. In the past, it was; causing world wars, wiping out native population, involving and bankrupting their colonies in their wars, and calling people in their colonies savages for wanting independence.

Just Euro things.

"Beacons of peace and human rights."

No wonder Israel is included too. Like peas in a pod.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

Yes, please, that self sphincter fondling show should have died 20 years ago, when Gido Horn baa'd "Piep, piep, piep, ich hab euch alle lieb..."

The very last reminder this event overstayed its welcome should have been Stefan Raab blubbering "Wadde hadde dude da?"

[–] [email protected] 36 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Going by how Germany has been doing in Eurovision historically it’s not really that big of a loss.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

AS a German I can only agree

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

KAN maintains that it fully complies with EBU regulations and emphasizes its editorial independence from the Israeli government.

Lol, the lyrics are as close to propaganda as they can get away with.

I also want to point out that we are talking about broadcasters here, not countries. KAN is by far the broadcaster that is the least independant from their government right now.

In the event of a vote, Germany, Italy, Greece, Azerbaijan, and Cyprus are also expected to side with Israel.

Add Switzerland and Austria.

So it's a bit more than just Germany and Italy...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

azerbaijan, notably, the only other EBU country not signatory to the Rome Statute.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The whole article reeks of bullshit, with the only source being a "former member of Israel’s Eurovision delegation". But the difference is that Italy and Germany allegedly threatens to leave the song contest in protest, whereas the other countries listed are merely expected to vote to keep Israel in the contest.

[–] [email protected] 35 points 1 day ago (1 children)

As an Italian, I feel ashamed of this statement made by the government actually in charge

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Not necessarily the government - this is from the public broadcasters, who should ideally be somewhat independent. Also this article asks us to trust some person from the former Israeli Eurovision delegation as a source.

That said, Italy's current government is a dark cloud over the country. But at least in Italy it feels like an exception. In Germany it's just the same broad coalition as always, and despite being the first country who should really know better they do not seem to be doing any better than the neo-fascists in Italy.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Our governments have always been disgraces, but I guess it's inevitable, given ... Everything

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The greatest strength of Italy to me is how unruly it is. No matter who the government is, I trust the people of Italy to do their own thing and to largely carry on as usual.

Not that fascism in Italy wasn't awful, but totalitarianism was a relatively unsuccessful project compared to some other places. And of course ended with Mussolini dangling.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 20 hours ago

Maybe we should go with anarchy, it's got a long tradition here after all

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago

Oh no! Anyways

[–] [email protected] 62 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Of all the countries that could throw their support behind genocide and rising fascism.. it had to be you two.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago

It's really fucking striking.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (2 children)

In the past year or so I’ve gone from incredibly positive views of Germany to thinking of it even worse than America.

Seems the de-nazification of Germany needs to continue.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

The crackdown on activists (especially oil & Israel) in EU and UK scared me too. I just didn't really think it possible without a huge backslash, and certainly not this easy (very little to none political debate - everyone is acting like this is the most logical if gov actions).

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I agree with you that it is getting worse, but comparing to America is a stretch.

[–] [email protected] 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The world can live without Eurovision.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

For sure, but it's a bummer
