Goodnight everyone. Thank you for putting up with my constant drama posting.

Sleep well ❀️

Finished Interstellar after being hooked on the soundtrack. I don't know if I can do space movies anymore πŸ˜•

Waiting on the ferry. Would highly recommend North Stradbroke.

I've been there. My "Uncle's" mob was from there. The Walkers. His mum was Kath the poet and his son was Raymond the school teacher. He was Dennis the leader of the Australian Black Panthers - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_Walker_(activist)

Of all my luck they’re going to do maintenance on the power grid again and I’ll be without power again for Sunday.

Why do they keep doing this doing my holidays!

I better set the timer for the heater so it’s at least somewhat warm when I wake up and need to figure out food if the maintenance doesn’t end early.

Is the only place to buy those posh lighters only at smokos or the internet?

Was thinking of getting one as a gift, but since I don't smoke, no idea where the proper place to get one is.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Even for a smoker they're not a great gift imo. I had a zippo that I never used as it smelled and needed filling too often.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I see. What would have been a better fit in that case?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 18 hours ago

I agree with SaneMartigan in theory, but with gifts it's really about the thought I reckon. For practicality purposes those lighters are not great - Bic lighters are cheap and are flawless. You can't really improve on them too much. That said I'd appreciate a cool lighter as a gift anyway.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 20 hours ago

Smoke/vape shops will have quite a selection, places like the Reject shop will have some at the cheaper end of the market. Pay attention to how the item is refueled - you want the kind where you can get the injector refills from Bunnings in the bbq section. Cos those lighters are only good if filled with fuel. And the cheap ones tend to leak which can be a problem and a fire hazard.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Do you mean a Zippo, or something else?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

I think so? The metal clicky lighters you used to see in James Bond films and the like.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 20 hours ago

You can find them in those small shops in the centre of shopping centres that cut keys, fix shoes, engraving and stuff.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 20 hours ago

I reckon you are thinking of a Zippo. You can buy them online but you probably want to gift it with a can of lighter fluid which you can only buy in person. Both are sold at smoke shops and often camping/outdoorsy shops.

I am home. Tropical sun was amazing. Family was ...good. I had fun. But I am tired and in dire need of introvert time. Bed at 8 tonight I think. Back to work tomorrow though.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

That's a pretty fast turnaround for going back to work! I used to do things like fly in on Monday morning after a holiday but need an increasing amount of time between flights and work these days. Hope you can fully recharge tonight and the rest of the week is chill. Really gonna need to tap on that stored sunlight with the weather forecast for this week.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 20 hours ago

Yeah I would like to have a day to regroup but it was an awkward time to get away. I bit the bullet and got a woolies delivery of easy but decent food so I don't have to think too much about food prep. And thanks for the heads up. Hadn't checked the weather πŸ₯ΆπŸ₯Ά

[–] [email protected] 7 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I was thinking of doing noodles for an easy dinner tonight, but I think my noodles are still in a box somewhere. I'm not sure I have enough enthusiasm for anything else. Maybe cheese and crackers, I'm pretty sure I can find all the ingredients for that.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 19 hours ago

Simple is good. Sometimes you need it nice and easy.

So we decided to turn over a new leaf at work. Turns out my old manager is under extreme stress for me to succeed in my role. From the way he was saying it, it sounded like there was some hectic shit going on in the background.

He apologised to the 2 dudes he shoved and he's gone back to being normal.

So that's a win.

We worked twice as hard (literally) at last week's eofy event than the same time last year, however there is a backlog of work because we're understaffed and the expectation from the old timers is that we work 12 hour days every day to get it done.

That's not how things work these days. It's not the late 90s.

And the world isnt going to end.

Would have been nice for someone to say "good work leading the team dude".

I get why people buy lottery tickets.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 20 hours ago

I hope you don’t have keep doing 12 hour days, that was burning you out.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Lol been sleeping and playing CotL today, so just heard the news. I guess it isn't wrong to say Erin is a murderer.

I still wish I could understand what the motive was :/ it's so senseless

[–] [email protected] 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Some of my colleagues reckon she wanted notoriety. What a way to do it though?? And sound like a total idiot on the stand...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 18 hours ago

Hm I dunno about that but if she thought she could get away with it she was pretty stupid lol

Does anyone here have tips about doing side gigs on an ABN? I created one for shits and giggles a couple of years ago but never used it. Now an opportunity might have come up where an org wants me to do a sort of training/workshop thing for a few employees. I intend for it to be a once off (maybe a second session at best) - set scope, hours, lump sum - but idk how I should be reporting all of this in terms of tax and what documents to generate and keep.

I guess my ABN should be on the quote and invoice... GST?! and do I issue a receipt... I will Google things after dinner but if anyone has any personal tips (esp anything that's easy to overlook) I'd be very grateful.

E: now I'm getting truly lost in the weeds with personal services income and whatever. Geez. I'm glad most of my income is from a job at a company

[–] [email protected] 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

You shouldn't need gst for a small amount unless this place needs you to be GST registered. Use some free accounting software like Wave if it still exists and operate as a sole trader.

Talk to your accountant if you have one. They'll give you this advice for free as they make their money from doing your books if you make it big

[–] [email protected] 2 points 17 hours ago

I think that place should be fine without GST but I'll definitely ask when I chat to my contact tomorrow. Need to ask if professional indemnity insurance is required because I ain't doing it if so - I really don't intend to do this for the broader industry, not worth paying monthly insurance...

And I've never used an accountant bar the one time years ago when I was on WHV tax rates for half the FY and needed help lodging. I don't think I'll earn enough from this one off event to warrant getting an accountant but... if they ask me an additional time, I might get an accountant to help. I do have a family friend who is a CA so I might ask their advice. Lots to think about to do it the right way! Wish I could do it for cashies lol.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I can ask Boyo, but it will be out of date. Do not use the gig apps if a physicss as l trade, they take too high a percentage.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 20 hours ago

Absolutely no apps involved, it's just between me and another company I know at this point for some very specific skills. Pretty much like doing a favour and getting paid for it, except I have to issue an invoice and make it all official and shit.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (2 children)

Check your employment agreement - it might say you need need your employer's permission to have a side gig.

You have to issue invoices with your ABN on them. I use Xero for my invoicing, but my side gig is my whole gig so it's worth paying for proper accounting software. There's probably a cheaper (or free) option out there for creating invoices.

If you're not registered for GST as well, then I think you don't need to charge any GST for your services (do a check on this). GST reg is needed if you'll earn over $75k in a year.

You declare the income for your side gigs in your tax return and pay tax to ATO at that point.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

This is correct re GST. If you start getting towards breaching 75k in a year you have to register for gst. Before that you just write clearly on the invoice that no GST is charged (so they know how to put it through for their BAS). https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/gst-excise-and-indirect-taxes/gst/registering-for-gst

[–] [email protected] 2 points 20 hours ago

That's great. The client is definitely going to want an invoice that complies with all their business... accounting... thingos so I was worried I'd have to charge GST, but it looks like I don't and just stating that will make it work nicely. Thanks!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 21 hours ago

Thanks heaps for the advice. Yes I've already run this one past my employers and they're good (actually shockingly good considering the details).

Really don't intend to do this more than as isolated one offs so I think I'll find something free. Won't earn 75k+ a year from it either but I'll have a look into what services attract GST etc.

So the tax only gets paid at tax time, not progressively... That's good, I might keep this extra income as a buffer and when it comes to June 2026 I'll probably throw it into super to reduce marginal tax on it. If it works like that.

Thanks once again, personal experience is really helpful!

Regarding the Back to the Beginning show:

I have always been of the opinion that aging rock stars should take a step back and reflect on the glory days… and try to be satisfied with what they have accomplished. (and step aside for the modern talent) Nobody wants to see an elderly person in a wheelchair try and re-live the glory days on stage and end up being an embarrassment for themselves and their legacy.

So, as troubling as it may be to watch Ozzy belt out the classics at the Back to the Beginning show while sitting in a giant leather chair throne., he still sounds unbelievably amazing for his age and condition. astonishing really.

That’s really it I guess. I haven’t had the chance to see all of the sets yet, however the generational range of the bands seemed as good as could be expected.

Just remembered Peter Dutton will never been Prime Minister and it really warmed my heart

[–] [email protected] 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

This an onion at him πŸ§…

[–] [email protected] 5 points 20 hours ago

Yes I know, when onions and potatoes collide chips happen

[–] [email protected] 8 points 22 hours ago

That's always a good fact to remind ourselves of during these dark times, I appreciate the positive energy
