The moment the light turns green is the moment I take my foot off the brake. I move very slowly forward while checking the cross streets (way too many people running red lights, it's absurd). Taking your foot off the brake lets the cars behind you know you're paying attention.

They're just yelling for joy at the light turning green

There were always three topics that would start a fight on Reddit:

  1. Nuclear power
  2. The care and feeding of a cat
  3. Any mention of driving less than 500 mph in the fast lane

I feel like this one goes in the third bucket. Be better than Reddit, Lemmy.

I do this to people who are weaving around traffic and cut me off and we're both at the same light anyway. so I honk the moment the light turns green just to be a dick.

some dude honked at me because I dared to stop at a level crossing because the other side wasn't clear

I'm not getting ran over by a fucking train because I couldn't wait a few seconds

eh. i'm paying attention most of the time, and i'm usually the one in the front because i drive a bike. i appreciate the auditory signal thats time to go when i'm looking another way during the break for any reason.

car horns sound aggressive but the honkers arent always honking it aggressively.

Pay attention. Significantly more cars can make it through the lights per "green" if everyone moves as soon as they can. You're creating extra stationery traffic for everyone.

i do most of the time. i drive a bike, you can go around me if you are in a hurry.

but like, sound your horn when it goes green and ill go immediatly, i don't mind it at all.

If everyone left a car length in front of them then they could all start accelerating at the same time and more cars will get through.

We don't know if you're high, sleeping, on your phone, or just watching SpongeBob on your infotainment panel. All we know is that you're failing of the one expectation of you.
Honking at you gets your attention back where it needs to be. Don't take it personal. People have places to be.

y'all are using your phones and drug paraphernalia way too fucking often. it's infuriating how little you cagers don't pay attention meanwhile you're surrounded by computer controlled explosives and hundreds of pounds of glass.

I fucking hate you all. oblivious murderers.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

I'm gonna need you to take about 20% off the top there buddy

The person at the front of the queue at a light has a solemn duty to pay attention and move as soon as possible .

I take this very seriously, but as with everything humans let me down constantly.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I've seen way too many idiots ignore red lights since COVID to "move as soon as possible" anymore. I'm not risking getting Tboned to appease some impatient twat behind me.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

Always look both ways, no matter how long the light has been green. I need to see you're paying attention though, that's the thing. So many people in the front of the line are sitting on their phone so sleeping or whatever the fuck. It's pretty obvious when someone is just checking the intersection before moving vs. not even looking at the damn road.

This goes for more than just driving too. If you're next in line at the café and you can't be fucked to think about anyone behind you while you finish sending a text or whatever while the server is waiting to take your order, you're an asshole. Make your order, pay, then do what you want to do.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

Yep, saw a car get t-boned 2 years ago. I take a second to make sure that no car is trying to beat the red light before I move.

[–] [email protected] -2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

this is very much true, but it is still ur choice whether u honk at them. u will find that many times people will notice 2 seconds later and give a lil thank/apology wave ur way.

i think the best way of handling it if ur in a hurry is a super short honk, just enough to wake them up without making them feel attacked.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago

Of course, a nice short toot just to get their attention.

Because unlike literally everyone I encounter outside my home, I am aware that other people exist.

[–] [email protected] 49 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The same second? I agree. But even two seconds should be plenty to notice the light is green and begin accelerating. By second four, I'm giving you a gentle honk because I suspect you are either on your phone, or zoned out.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Every time I see one of these memes posted, I automatically assume it was some dill hole on his/her phone not paying attention and posts this to try to justify or feel better. I've never run into anyone that is that impatient at a light. People honk because you're not paying attention, and in this day and age it's usually peeps on their phone.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago

I would also assume this, if I hadn't also repeatedly witnessed the exact behaviour the OP describes. The "instant honk on green" drivers also tend to follow up with whatever reckless maneuver allows them to beat you to the next red light by 1.5 seconds. Inattentiveness and impatience are both dangerous on the road.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I've seen people like that super often, I've never measured but I've probably seen impatient honkers more than I've seen actual distracted people at a light. Your experience is not global.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

I honestly cannot believe you, simply due to the relevance world wide of those dash cell mounts.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

You must live in Boston.

[–] [email protected] 41 points 3 days ago

How about you get off your damn phone and pay attention? It's actually been green for five whole seconds.
