MODERATORS

Was tempted to call this "Debate 2: Electric Boogaloo" but a) A lot of Lemmy won't get the OG reference. and 2) "Boogaloo" has been co-opted and carries an unfortunate connotation these days.

Also, while it's Trump's 2nd debate of the season, it's Harris's first...

It's being run by ABC News at 9 PM Eastern time, 6 PM Pacific, I see MSNBC starts their coverage TWO HOURS EARLY. That's a lot of air time to fill, guys. Good luck!

Live updates, how and when to watch, debate rules, etc. here:

Link to the first debate thread here:

That't it! Thanks for hanging with it everbody!

Harris sounds nervous and needs water. She's hiding it pretty well, but she also gets that kind of pursed, constricted voice when she's nervous. I hope she smooths and gets comfortable. She seems much more prepared but much more automated than Trump. She can't sound like she's on the stump. She's got to take some swings that don't sound like a recording.

Finally! A moderator who fucking FOLLOWS UP!

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 months ago

Kind of, but he let Trump completely slide on that tariff non-answer.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago

He fell for the Wharton reference. She’s doing fantastic so far.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 months ago

Trump’s Wharton professor repeatedly called him ‘the dumbest goddamn student I ever had’.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Kamala talking about Wharton and Nobel prize winners and Goldman Sachs. Idiot voters will just hear “elites”. You can’t use facts or science with people who are going to vote trump.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 months ago (3 children)

I’ve already lost count of trump’s lies, and we’re not even 10 minutes in.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago

It's amazing how glibly he does it. Almost impressive. Almost.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago

If his lips are moving...

Trump just accidentally admitted he thinks there is "some good" in Project 2025.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Trump monotone-ing about insane asylums being emptied into the country.

@[email protected] can you set the sort by New for this thread?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

The creator of a post cannot choose the default sort for the viewers.

Trump definitely doesn't know what a tariff is.

She's definitely going to get the chance to question if Trump knows what a tariff is.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago

Ooh. Tariffs right of the bat. Here we go.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago

Trump sales tax!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago

I just hope they both have a lot of fun!

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 months ago

He wasn't going to shake her hand, lol.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 months ago (2 children)

That handshake was awkward

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 months ago

Trump looked like he wanted to avoid it altogether.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Hard shaking hands with someone who has so much smaller hands. ;)

Harris needs to stage whisper “small hands, tiny baby hands” while her mic is muted.

Over/Under he strokes out?

Here we go!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago

Just saw that Tim Walz is hosting a watch party: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRwJpRtb6C4

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago

ABC is really milking the opportunity during the pre-show to push its news division, and to show commercials for all of their TV shows. It’s like an hour long infomercial.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

Walz is having a watch party stream: https://www.youtube.com/live/iRwJpRtb6C4

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Which stream/TV source is everyone watching?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

My plan is to just pull up MSNBC on Sling.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I'm listening to CNN on Sirius, have ABC News stream up, Breaking Points stream audio on, and Waltz stream closed captions. Too much? Hah

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Harris really, really needs to nail Trump on blocking the bipartisan immigration bill. Speaker Johnson was on board until Trump intervened for the sole purpose of running on the issue.

This is the time that people who don’t follow politics and don’t know that are paying attention.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago

It wasn't even that he wanted to run on the issue, he wanted to prevent the Democrats from having a "win".

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

45 minutes. I do like the fact that the MSNBC hosts are acknowledging just how stupid the modern "debate" is.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago

And the hypocrisy/asymmetry of the media coverage. O’Donnell nailed it. It’s infuriating.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

Breaking Points live debate coverage just started: https://www.youtube.com/live/TaMlWRRzBPo

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 months ago (4 children)

One thing I'm trying to be mentally prepared for: Trump doing reasonably well. He's not a good debater, and he's not even going to debate, he's going to try to put on a show. But while the man has very few actual skills, brainless spectacle is one of them. So I'm trying to be prepared for that.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I think the time limits will work in his favor, he won't have the time to ramble and go off the rails.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago

That's definitely a concern.

I don't think there's any doubt that Harris herself will do well, I just think it's a good idea to recognize that the format does indeed play to Trump's strengths and puts band-aids over his (very deep) deficiencies.
